Converting 2.5 to LPG

Is there any point? Want a Disco for off road/green laning use but also needs to be a daily driver. So a 2.5 diesel is going to cost quite a bit every time i fill up but if I change it to lpg it will be cheaper to fill, yes?

Opinions whether it would be worth it please? ?

Does that mean you can only convert petrol engines to LPG? Still would it be worth it to save money when filling up?

Correct. LPG is usually about 80% of the mpg of the petrol figure but half the price of diesel.
Looking at about 14-16mpg for LPG in a V8 disco I'd have thought, so about the cost equivalent of 30mpg diesel but with all the fun of the big V8's power.

No but perhaps u mean Bi-Fuel Diesel/LPG conversion which enables both diesel fuel and LPG to be injected at the same time.

The cost of the conversion would no doubt outweigh the fuel saving benefit, but maybe not, so get it done and let the others how u get on. :)

The V8 can be converted the TD5 remapped for economy
 
The MPG for a Thor V8 is pretty good, I think 80% of petrol figure is a bit low, but it does depend on your driving style and where you are driving the car.

On a run we get much higher figures, even on motorway running, constant speed makes a big difference.

Lowest we have had is about 10mpg on gas when we had some severe gradients towing the big trailer fully loaded.

To get to work for me is a 3-minute walk, so I don't need the car. When I need to go anywhere it is always ready, long distance no problem, I have a list of known LPG suppliers that I can use, plus an app on my Galaxy Tab4 called LPG CNG Finder.

As has been pointed out, you can't use LPG alone on a diesel engine - the hybrid LPG/diesel conversion is used to up the engine power output to petrol engine levels rather than to get better MPG. Its expensive, and not many companies will touch it as its still a comparatively risky option.

If you're looking for a daily driver which can offroad, then I'd get a late good condition 300Tdi Disco 1. These can run on pure veggie oil throughout the summer as long as you do extra oil and oil/fuel filter changes. You'll need to use diesel in the winter though, as veggie oil turns waxy when its cold, so may solidify in the tank, fuel lines, injectors etc etc. The other option is a twin tank veggie oil conversion which allows you to run diesel until the engine has warmed up, then switch over to veggie oil - but the kit has a heating system to liquefy the veggie oil to prevent it waxing up.

You can only do this with Bosch fuel pump equipped engines as the Lucas ones are significantly weaker and cannot cope with the veggie oil. The 300Tdi has a Bosch VE pump which is about the best pump made ;)

I run my 300 Tdi on diesel veg oil and 5% petrol. Keep record of veg used incase I get dipped by excise.
Morrisons have just had deal on veg £4 for 5l so been buying loads.
Disco runs fine on veg mix, takes few more seconds to start, had no problems and will change filters more often.
Getting around 30mpg.
My V8 lpg was doing about 10/12 mpg with heavy winch & bumper, steel steering guard, MT tyres roofrack and towing my Sankey.
Love the Tdi for its economy! Miss power etc of V8.

Careful. You have to pay excise in the month in which the veg was used. You don't get to back pay if you get caught.:eek:

You are allowed 2500 litres per year before you have to register with HMRC but if you go over you pay tax on ALL oil used.
The allowance is per person so if you and partner drive vehicle that's 5000 litres !!!! Don't think I'll go over 96litres a week!!!

Converting diesel to LPG is a very expensive things to do, but I imagine it would be well worth it. LPG is cheaper than diesel, so not only will you save money on the lower fuel prices but Gastek claim you will get a minimum on 10% better economy. They also claim longer engine life and the best thing, minimum 20% more power and torque :D

The more LPG that is that is mixed with the diesel, the better efficiency and more power and torque you get. Obviously, if you put too much LPG in the engine will blow, so if you do get LPG for your truck, be careful :p

Look at Gastek's website and have a talk to them. You can get huge fuel savings and plenty more power and torque. Apart from a huge upfront cost, it would be worth it in the long run. Right now Gastek's website is under reconstruction but have a look at their website when its done. I have an advert for them in a magazine which I'll photo-copy for you later.
