I'll shut up now and have a look at mine in the morning, so I know what i'm talking about ;)
Mines an 87 with 200tdi Disco so should have the same set up i'd have thought

Look at the second picture on this listing here, it shows the two ribbon connectors, probably worth a quick check that the connectors are fully seated

In fact looking at the above link buz is correct in that there are twist bulb holders, I normally change mine from the front though.

hi buz sorry Iv not updated for couple of days but iv not had chance to look at it yet. I had a go testing the wire that goes to start the alternator working ,where it comes out of the bulkhead tonight just before it got dark and theres no voltage there :( i was hoping it was just a case of fitting a new wire from where it comes out of the back of the dash as the wire feels stiff from the engine heat but unfortunately not the case. its my daily so iv been charging the battery overnight to keep the battery topped up so I can get to work and do errands ect.

should this wire be constant ignition live? or does it just power for a moment after start up to get the alternator working?

I have been wondering if I can take an ignition live from the fuel pump solonoid? only temporaly while I find the problem and sort it out properly.

its a nightmare when its your daily and rely on it heavily isnt it! :)

iv finally got the day off tommorow and im going to have to swap my transfer box too as its making some bad noises!

The exciter wire is a permanent live when the ignition is on, make sure you supply it to the alternator via a 12 volt 1.2 to 1.5 watt bulb as it is used as a current limiter.

I will do if i have to resort to this temporary method.

iv been studying mad hat mans wiring diagram

what is the part that is no. 63? (ignition light resistor) could this cause a failure in the circuit?

cheers!!!

Tom.

it needs to be live all the time to activate the alternator. I does need to be feed via a 1.2w lamp tho. do NOT apply 12v direct.

the resistor just allows current to flow to the alternator, if the bulb fails. Not sure on resistance tho.

most likely 240Ohms 1.5w
