Clutch slip

Thought I would put up some pictures. Am in a bit of a state cause this is my only transport to work for tomorrow, and I need to sort out this oil contamination problem before I can put the engine back in again.

Ah'd be tempted tae say that it might be the oil seal on yer gearbox. Ye'll find it behind that plate in the second photie.
When ah did my clutch change, ah was advised tae change the seal while ah was in there. Just a thought;)

you had std seal dowty are better worse leak than ive seen in long while ,clutch plate dosent look oily just old, seal for gearbox if needed but rare to leak and i wouldnt change unless has ftc5303 plus gasket as gasket alters shimming of gear box shafts

So what you are saying is that even though there's a massive oil leak coming from somewhere, the friction disc itself doesn't seem to be contaminated?

Think I will just get rear crank oil seal, and the big flywheel housing to block gasket, put new clutch etc in and whack it all back together again.

Going to pick up seal from main stealers tomorrow, and try to get engine back in after work.
 
Snap! I wonder if my clutch will start to slip soon! A drip every 6 seconds when idling! God knows when pressure is up!

Managed to get hold of a rear crank seal today, but couldn't get the large gasket, so going to have to wait till Wednesday before I can get it back together again. Bugger :(
 
let us know how tapping the seal in with a hammer goes.. i did the last one with a press but wont be able to on mine.
 
yehh that looks like the right one.. leave the plastic thing in the middle if you can. tap the old one out from the other side to the one we are looking at there ^. then give it all a good clean and put the new one in so the green? face is facing you if you have the side facing you as up there^. basically turn it round, knock it out, turn it back round knock it in.
 
thats dowty seal best type of seal,dont go poking around with lip of seal ,lay old seal on top then cut some ply etc,to use as dolly to knock in carefully if out case is distorted wont seal properly,white plastic is to enable you to fit with out damage to seal lip
 
How are you getting on with it now Langers?

I reckon I'll be doing the rear crank oil seal pretty soon, as this is what I currently have under my 90.

I'm not getting any clutch slip or any other symptoms though.

I'm not 100% sure where the seal is either, which is partially stopping me (well, that and the fact that my 200tdi is running soo smooth atm and I dnt want to mess it up!), so once you find out, I will be intrigued to know.

Oh, thanks for posting the piccies as well...I've only ever seen diagrams in Haynes of these areas, so it's good to know what to expect if I ever decide to tackle it!
 
James, excuse my ignorance, but is this the "rear gasket" what you speak of?

You may be right with regards to it not being the seal, cos when the engine was put in (just over a year ago) a new rear crank oil seal was installed. I just assumed it was a britpart seal/was inserted incorrectly and has failed.

I could do with a blown up diagram of what seal and gasket goes where in this area. I'm guessing it all becomes clear when you take it apart, but it's having the bottle to do it when the Defender is my main vehicle now.
 
it is a 200 rear gasket but not very good one ,the important bit is the part around crank boss where rear main brg cap joins block the oil comes out of joins ,good gasket is better material and impregnated with sealer to seal cap joins
 
Thanks James...I'm off to google a better gasket then and will report back once I have found one suitable. I assume it's the same part no.

I don't understand the need for a "rear gasket" as surely oil shouldn't be getting into this area anyway? To me it should all be oil free? The rear crank oil seal should keep the oil within the engine and the gearbox input seal should keep the gearbox oil within the gearbox? But obviously I am incorrect as there is this "rear gasket". Does that make sense?
