Sound, that sorts that then! Cheers. Hope all goes well with your change langers! Is it worth doing anything else while your there? Crank oil seal or have you done it?

Cheers mate :) Yeah crank rear oil seal, and I seem to remember another one I wanted to change back there somewhere, between the flywheel housing and the block? I seem to remember there being one there, and it had a crazy blue pattern thing on it. Might be imagining it though :D
 
Ahhh yes that big weird shaped one? I'm going to get one later today and get the flywheel housing and flywheel fitted, any ideas how to hold the engine while you torque the flywheel bolts? I can imagine it will just turn the engine over!
 
let me kno if you get a pert number for that gasket, i went to the local parts place and he said there isnt a gasket there.. looked on the IPC and found there isnt one.. but there is one on the disco engine!!??
 
I actually found it a few days ago when I was looking - ERR1440.

I haven't ordered one as a proper Elring one is about £20. Think I will just clean the gasket up (it wasn't in bad shape last time I had the engine out) and seal with some RTV sealant ;)
 
To be honest I think he couldn't be arsed looking! Will take the part number to em! Cheers guys. I was going to just smear hylomar or rtv as you say! There isn't one on the td engine to be fair...?
 
before you condemn your clutch plate have you tried adjusting as mentioned above Langers ?

Yeah did that first thing, didn't seem to make any difference unfortunately.
The other thing is that the clutch doesn't slip until it's warmed up, which I am told is symptomatic of the plate wearing out or being contaminated.

I ordered an AP Driveline (Borg & Beck) clutch kit yesterday along with an HD release arm. Alls I need now is an engine hoist. Want to get hold of a 2nd hand one, as I got completely ripped off before when I hired one from HSS.
 
about 40 squid inc a quality new bearing - stops the crappy plastic standard thing melting/wobbling/splitting etc

Is the standard (included in the kit) one likely to cause issues then? 40 quid is quite a lot of money to me at the moment, but if it genuinely is going to stop future problems then I suppose it would probably be worth it.
 
Reet, well because of the weather last weekend I postponed the work till now - have got the engine out and clutch disassembled.

When I parted engine from gearbox, a fair bit of oil spilled out from the bellhousing, and the inside of the flywheel housing and bellhousing is all pretty oily.

It is now clear that the clutch isn't worn (badly, anyway), but is contaminated with engine oil - so need advice, how best to proceed from here?

How should I clean it all up -- the flywheel etc is also quite oily.

Could the rear crankshaft oil seal be causing this? If so how hard is it to change it?
 
rear crank shaft oil seal is pretty easy to do. but i used a fly press and an aircraft engine stand pin thing to push the new one in, and i had the housing off the engine. you could do it gently with a hammer or something.

id just clean everything with some degreaser to get the oil out of the way.. then stick your new oil seal and clutch in.. HD fork??
 
very unusual must have had wading plug in,there three possible leaks rear main oil seal ,clutch slave and gearbox input seal is input shaft wet going into front gear box housing ,if it is you will need new seal in there easy job,rear main oil seal if 200 tdi needs flywheel off and rear housing to change with new gasket to seal rear main bearing which covers whole of rear of block, 300 just needs flywheel off and seal housing and gasket replacing as there are no dowels you need to centralise your self,more info if you want

Yep have got a full clutch kit with release bearing and a HD fork ready to go in. :D
