Clutch gone on my defender

Was up in North Wales this weekend and of all the places for it to happen my clutch went.

It's been quite high for about 1000 miles but didn't seem to be getting any worse, and the clutch was as stiff as you'd expect so didn't see it coming at all.

About 5 miles before it went the pedal got very soft and the biting point was ridiculously low. 5 miles later and I lost all drive and she came to a standstill at the bottom of a hill.

Got recovered to my usual garage and now anticipating a nice hefty bill! Just what you need right after Christmas! :(

Spoke to the mechanic this morning and he doesn't think my landy (92 tdi) is the type with an unbolt-able cross member so he reckons it'll probably have to be done with the seats, seatbox etc out.

Thats a bit annoying, hope it gets fixed soon, ask your mechanic if you can help him do it you may save a few quid and learn how to do it !
 
If its not unboltable you'll be doing it old school like my series. I had a roof rack on mine so could sling a scaffold pole and chain block underneath without damaging the roof, a set up which worked well but I dont know you'd manage it on yours with no roofrack
 
Mechanics talking crap, all the ones I've seen are unboltable.
As said, either offer to help, or do it yourself and save yourself a fortune :)
 
Mine's a 92 110 like yours and the gb x member is a bolt on job. The debate is wether it's less work to take out the gearbox or the engine. Did mine a few months ago by dropping the gearbox but having done it both ways I'd say engine out is easier.
 
Pedal going soft indicates slave or master failure. Can you start it in gear and it will move or is there absolutely nothing ?

Im preety sure the crossmember would be removable, if not engine out would be the easiest way, taking the seatbox out is a PITA.
 
Helped my neighbour take the gearbox out of his series 2 on sunday to do the crankshaft seal and it was a massive pita ,seatbox and floor plates out then we found out all the extra work needed to get at the seal on those old engines

Seals still not done !
 
You won't need to take the seatbox out on a fender. If you've got an engine crane you can drop the gearbox onto the floor easy enough once you've taken the tunnel out and the middle seat hole cover. It would be slightly easier to manouvre it without the seatbox but it can be done.
