Classic oil change mistakes,

Been there - got the T shirt! It's only the initial rush of hot oil ejecting sideways from the drain hole that causes the mess. For the next change I folded a sheet of cardboard against the ns chassis/exhaust to direct the flow down to a six litre oil container (with the side cut out) & retrieved the plug after I'd decanted the old oil into another can for disposal. Having bought a new combi spanner to undo the plug (used twice!) I confess to giving the 20w50 mineral to my local indie these days & letting him get on with it!

Given the environmental regulations here, oil changes always go to a garage for me. It's just too much hassle to get rid of the old oil.

Ok...

When we were young 19-20 ish

A friend (no it wasn't me) was going to drive to Donington for the monsters of rock and his car needed a service. One of the group knew what he was doing and talked him though the oil change. My mate went to the auto factors and was talked into buying engine flush and decent oil. He poured the flush into the oil filler and let it tick over for 10 minutes or whatever it said then he scurried under the car and undid the sump plug letting the oil drain into a container. He did up the plug and pulled the container out. He didn't change the oil filter but then poured the correct amount of oil into the engine........

A couple of days later back in the pub he says that the car is grinding through the gears and is loosing power plus its chucking out lots of smoke.

We all go to check his car and the mechanic amongst us pulls out the dip stick. "Blimey" he says, "how much oil have you put in it!". To which my mate says that he's put the right amount in. He then offers to have a look. He empties the oil which is more than twice as much as there should be before discovering that my mate had emptied the gear box oil instead of the engine oil and as such he's running round with no gearbox oil in the gearbox and about 5 litres of old oil, 5 litres of new oil and a litre of flush in the engine.....

We still remind him of this 20+ years later

6 litre capacity - perfect for the 6.85 litres of oil inside a 200tdi... oh wait

I had a mate chane oil on our ramp, weve got proper catch tanks and everything but no he decides to use a bucket. What does he do, drops the ramp onto the bucket. Oil Everywhere !! :doh:

My son can better that, he let our 4 poster down on to our oil drainer, yes a 3 foot high proper oil drainer :doh: didn't make a mess but turned the funnel on top inside out
Was impressed though it supported the ramp and his discovery

Ive almost done that with ours :doh: sterted dropping it and realsed ... oohhh **** !

Ive never done it (honest) had a freind that did. But draining the gear box oil without checking you can remove the filler plug!! .....

Just take the middle seat out, open the hatch and remove one of the cover plates. don't think i've ever use the filler plug on the G/b or T/b or o/d
