Classic oil change mistakes,

So,

Just changed the engine oil for the first time,

Made a classic mistake of not having the container close enough to the sump plug and now have a lot of oil on my gravel drive

Cleaned the sump plug and re-inserted and began to refill,

Now have too much,

waiting for oil to settle before I can get a reliable reading,

Going to be a dirty day !

And now I have to buy some gravel to replace what I have to chuck !

Next best thing is having the container in the right place but dropping the sump plug in it! then having to spend 10mins trying it find it and fish it out!
And if its a Defender surely your used to puddles of oil on your drive way!!

Both times I have emptied the diesel out of mine I have lost the tank plug in the jerry can. It is very hard to get the plug out of a jerry can full of diesel.

Defender is sound, never leaked anything,

Disco 1 on the otherhand is leaking everythin but coolant

sounds like ur having one of them days

i always keep a telescopic magnet around , but know some plugs cant be picked up that way.

i use a 6 litre plastic milk carton , cut the side off and leaving the handle on, undo the lid, put a large metal tray down with a big oil container on it , then undo the sump plug , allow the plug to drop into the milk container and with the lid off can direct it straight into the oil container or do the same if im draining fuel, just find it easier in allowing the milk container to catch the drain plug

if i have to put the milk container at an angle i put a piece of gauze on the outlet to stop the plug going into the oil container

find it hard with a funnel as if the plug drops in it blocks it up and oil ends up overflowing

hope this doesn't come across as rude or telling u how to suck eggs, and u get on ok mate and theres nothing worse in getting covered in oil

think brick cleaner (acid) is good for oil stains

you can also use a oil extractor like a pella and suck it out without removing the plug.

Put gravel in a bucket for now, and the soil that had oil on it,

Just going to bin them both, Land Lord will never know !

My mate cam round to change the oil on his BMW 3 series once - he was using some really expensive castrol oil that met the BMW spec..... shame he didn't put the sump plug in before emptying a full 4 litre bottle into it!

Nothing can beat what i did (age 11) Dad had a Suzuki sj for offroad and i did the oil change.

Emptied the old oil ok, Put the sump plug back ok, Filled the engine full of oil ok!!! hang on wait.... I actually filled the engine full to the top with oil!

No damage done though as dad checked my work and found the fault! Put it this way i always check the level several times now

Yep, done that one, had done engine, gb, tb and axles, all containers under the series, all full, no lids on, drove off, oil EVERYWHERE!

I had a mate chane oil on our ramp, weve got proper catch tanks and everything but no he decides to use a bucket. What does he do, drops the ramp onto the bucket. Oil Everywhere !! :doh:

Best one was though I was changing the oil for a customer and he wanted to watch (fair enough at his risk) empty out the oil into a tray used my magnetic light on the chassis so I could see. Moved my arm. Thunk splost ....aaahhhhhh the torch had only dropped in the catch tank splashed oil everywhere invluding up the customers lovely WHITE chinos ..... hahahahah by christ he looked like a dalmatian

Just goes to show customers watching you work never goes well ....

Some years ago doing an engine swap on a friend's Vauxhall Viva, we were in such a hurry to see if the new engine would turn over and fire that we forgot to put the oil filter on. The engine fired, but I was puzzled to see a dark fluid shooting across the engine bay and splattering on the wall. Fortunately we'd only run the engine for about five seconds so not long enough to do it any harm. On the same occasion we'd forgotten to tighten up the engine's earth cable too, so the cable of the cable operated clutch made a lot of smoke. After starting the engine the finger tight earth strap bolt had welded itself into its hole, which took quite a bit of effort to free off.
