Classic Heater blower issues...

Possibly an odd one this or an easy one...

The heater blower behaves very oddly...

With AC off it only blows at the lowest speed, no matter what setting you have it on, with the exception of off, when it works properly and does not blow at all.

Turn the AC on and it makes no diffrance apart from settin 'III' when it blows a gale at you and fills the car with freezing air (yes I have fully working R12 AC in a classic!)

Any good ideas?

Are you sure? from reading various posts I am lead to belive when the resistor fails you loose all but speed 'III', and that is not the symptoms I have. Mine works on speed 'I' on all speeds but 'O' unless you switch the AC on , in which case speed 'III' does work. Is there a wiring diagram I can look at?

I have found the cause of this.. and its not the resistor (whihc in the case of late pre softdash cars is located in the side of the heater box..) I ahve finally got the heater box out and have found the rear bearing on the motor has failed, causing the aramture to rest on the magnets.. and thus not work.

However I have undone all the clips I can find, and the two circlips but the tow halves still will not come apart.. anything else need undoing?

Should repairing the motor not be an option, is the early disco heater box the same? it looks like it is but I woudl like to be sure, as they seem to be more common than range rover items!

I have the normal symptom of them only working on full.

I have just ordered the atlantic british upgrade kit as the original resistor pack cannot be found anywhere!!

I was wondering if I just plug it in I can leave the old one in place and just put the new one next to it as I cant be arsed to take off the decker panel! it should work right?
 
That depends.. if its like mine ('92 vougue SE) its NOT under the decker panel.. it's inside the heater box whcih will make you wish it was under the decker panel..

There is a long wire coil , like part of an old electric bar heater under the decker with 5 wires coming off it on spade connectors , that sound like it?

It is a 92 classic v8 with aircon.
 
It does indeed.. but on my '92 Vouge SE the heater blower resistor is inside the heater box, looks just like the one on an SIII. However the fans for the aircon are on an entirely different circuit, and no idea how they are controlled! so there may be two resistors? What would be nice is a circuit diagram of this HVAC system, but there seem to be none about, its missing from the haynes, and Rave only goes back to the 'soft dash' cars which have a totally different system again. I have asked repeatedly here but keep all I get back is 'its the resistor' which in my case I have found it most certainly is not
 
Thats funny , so you have a hard dash?

I ordered what I thought was the resistor but it turned out to be wrong, however to get the part they asked if the car had aircon so I am wondering if it is a resistor for aircon control, I was going to send the back (I got 2) but do you want to buy One and I could keep the other? I f we can find where they go then we might get lucky!

The reson I ask is that , as far as I can tell it was 2 of the last 4 in the uk of that part and it took some searching to get it!

Regarding your system if its a hard dash, on mine I can only have a/c coming through the face level vents and warm air through the foot and windscreen vents (not at the same time) is that normal?

Who designed this system lol it sucks! :doh:
 
As far as I can tell having the whole dash in bits.. the AC will only blow though the centre dash vents! there is no ducting on it to blow air from anywhere else. What does the resistor look like? as the one for the heater fan is a cylinder about 1/2" diameter by about 2" long. (this is bolted to the inside of the fan housing in the heater box). I did acquire another one that has a coil inside a 'frame' I have yet to look under the decker panel to see what I can see. My AC fans seem to work on high so maybe this is at fault..

It like a cermaic or tufnel plate , diamond shaped about 50mm long with a loose wire coil on it and 2 spade connectors on the back , for hard dash classics with A/C let me know if you want one by the end of tomrrow as I have to send them back otherwise, they are £15 but rare.

Also I would love to know where they go lol
 
The original fault is now fixed, however…

It now blows hot air, for a short while and then goes cold if you use full speed. Is this an air lock or caused by the LPG vaporiser being in parallel to the heater and reducing flow through it as a result?

The blowers turn off totally if you use anything other than full speed at the demist setting? (Other settings are fine)

What is the resistor attaches to the heat control for? As it is broken and nothing seems affected, not even the AC

How do I deal with the coolant filler plugs? They really do not want to come undone, and so I have not been able to refill the coolant using the correct method, is there a trick to this? My old range rover had these made from brass, but this one has horrid plastic versions.

What you need is a genuine workshop manual; the wiring diagram is in there together with a full explanation of how the A/C works. I'm sure if you look around you'll find one, in the alternative, go to a local stealer I'm sure they could order a genuine manual - it does have a "part number".
 
After I changed my coolant I had the same problem and as the heater only works on full it was able to bleed off the heat from the matrix.

Conclusion, either there is some air in the system although in 8 months it has not bleed out or caused other problems or the K-seal I added when I refilled to stop my core plugs leaking has partially blocked my matrix.. I am going to get my fan speeds working then flush the matrix with a garden hose.

I have restuened that other restor btw.

I think the job of the resitor is to vary fan speed according to the wind blowing in the vent at speed . That sounds a bit complicated for a landrover though, but it has it on the BMW.
 
I have a 1988/9 Range Rover Classic 6x4 TACR2a. The blower works -just - on 3 but not on the others. It is very weak and does not clear the screen. Not good in this winter weather. Any ideas what it might be please?

There is a resistor hidden under the scuttle panel that controls the power to the motors depending on speed switch position...

Either that or the switch is knackered....

I now this is an old thread but this problem has just happened to mine and I am slightly confused as to which of the above 'fix's' applies ?
I have 200 tdi Range Rover with air con, registered in 1992.

Fett, am I right in saying yours was a 92 classic ? if so what bits did you manage to fix it with ?
 
I also have this issue! Think i have deduced that mine has the resistor pack under the scuttle, accessable via the air vents. This should, in theory at least make for an easy fix with the Atlantic British replacement kit from Island 4x4.

I was about to order mine but the pesky vehicle has developed an intermittent power loss so that is priority!

I found an ebay supplier who can supply the scuttle vent foam as all but one section is missing from mine.
