Rave say 99 onward if the crankshaft sensor fails , the engine will stop and fail to restart there is no limp or back up facility programmed in the ECM however if a fault develops while the engine is not running the engine may not be capable of starting and no faul code will be avilible in this case the mil light will still be illuminated .if so things to be observed

Enging cranks but does not start

Mil remains on at all times

Engine misfire incorrect fitting of cps

Tachometer fails to work

It is imperative the correct spacers are use for the correct air gap that I can't find as yet no gap measurements just two spacers after 1999

Rick... when you go up to Rob's the fuel cost will be a killer... thought i had a long run from Nottingham. :)Brighton to Durham (331 mi, 5 hours 49 mins one way) I hope the crank sensor or the coil will be the end of it. :)
 
Nah, I drive a Discovery 3 TDV6 as my work car.

I will get this Range Rover running without seeing it.

Let's see who is brave enough to place some bets.
I do hope you do - Rob needs this bit of bad luck to change...

Hoping the Crank Sensor and/or Coils sorts it, as I can't think of anything else......

But I ain't a LandyTech so I am only going on what I think is logical....

If you can get it started without seeing it - I'll bung £20 in the Help for Heros pot at Tesco - if you can't, I'll bung in £20 in anycase its a good cause.
 
I'll bung in a fiver for Wammer's sandwiches. Don't think he'll have any travel costs because of those bus VIP ticket things.

With Rick consulting and Wammers on site, it will work even if the V8 is replaced by hamsters.

Hi guys ive fitted the crank shaft position sensor and its a genuine landrover supplied part from the dealer and its identicle and fitted as it came off with spacers etc all in place :)

still no fire :(

What is the liklihood that it could have lost sync again. I know Doug resynced it previously but with all the action that has happened since and the few times the battery has been disconnected maybe it has lost sync again.
Do you have a syncmate?
 
No ive not got a sync mate mate... the battery aint been off since Doug was last here so it shoudn't of been lost the sync should it....

Im not sure what it takes for it to lose sync. My '99 did it for no apparent reason one day after a long drive. Went out 10 mins later to get milk and she woulnd start. It never hapened at all on the '97.
If someone in the area has one they can lend you it might be worth a try.
 
Lack of Earth to the engine itself could result in no spark or one that is so weak it is indistinguishable as there would be no way to earth the coil...

And you are helping - you are pointing things out, and question my logic - which is great as it helps us all to reallly focus in and ensure we have checked everything.

On that basis I'll throw another [desperate] thought into the mix: are there any diodes that might have blown when he short that wire? Is it worth taking the positive lead off the alternator and repeating the voltage tests in case current is slipping the wrong way?

Ah Feck....

Did you fit the coils too or just the sensor??

Mate I am sick as a dog for you now - I am totally gutted....

If you havent tried the coils, I just hope they will do it....if you have and the sensor, I'm stumped...!!

Possible, but he is getting voltage to the Coil Packs....they just aren't firing.....

Usually if the diodes have gne in the Alt, he battery would be draining quite a bit!

Well reading back I still can't see who tested the ecu as doug's is gems and neo's is Thor unless its was one of these know to be working Scenarios also why was it £150 when you can pay this much Range Rover P38 4.6 THOR Engine ECU. Part No. (NNN 100660) | eBay I notice working previous to removing, most say non return / 24 hr the only way to know if your ECM works I'd have it Synced and tested on another car
