hi,is there a dipstick anywhere to check my autobox oil ,i seem to have some sort of leak coming from somwhere brown in colour but not from my engine /power steering but it all seems to build up underneath my front bumper,its brown and i know if its gearbox oil it should be red but getting paranoid now as i have read post indicating brown oil in gearbox is a bad sign so just want to make sure its not from there,p38 1999 4.0se auto:)

Hi.
On my 99 p38 the dipstick was taken off as i was informed by the landrover trained guys i used to use as to many people were incorrectly filling their gearbox's. You ideally need to get the car on some proper ramps as on mine it needed to be running (tickover) in neutral while you check the level. The oil cooler is at the front there with two pipes leading back to the g/box so maybe thats what is leaking. Brown oil means usually that it needs changing/getting hot. Buy some fresh oil ready to put in and smell the difference between the two.

i will buy the gearbox service pack think its a gasket washer etc,is it a big issue or can it be done roadside,

sorry forgot to ask which rad is the g-box oil cooler ,i have just changed the skinny middle one which was the engine oil cooler, bring on the money pit!!!!
 
Hi. Heres where it gets tricky. My wife and i are seperated and she has sold my p38 complete with new rpi engine (it's okay, i have now got a soft dash with a brooklands kit on so i can just about cope)!!!!!!! so i can't remember which one is the g/box cooler. If you trace the pipes under the front from the g/box you will be able to tell and if your resonably handy with the spanners it is'nt too big a job to do, best tackled over the weekend though.
The access to the underside for the oil change is the only issue, axle stands under the chassis is what i used to do once the car was all the up on the air suspension, but if you are not sure any garage can do it if they have four post car lift capable of taking the weight of the rrover and what my guy's said was when you have taken the level plug out it should just dribble out when ticking over in neutral.

thanks again nick ,did you use dexon 111 oil and did it take 9 litres or 5,is it recomended to change filter gasket and washer and bolt aswell,sorry for all the questions i just wanna make sure i sort it properly,

Hi. The auto box oil cooler is the one by the passenger side front wheel. Where the front fog lamp would have been.(hence the vented blanking plate where the fog light goes.) They leak if you are on the original one. The connections leak and just renewing the seals doesn't seem to do the job. Or they leak from taking a stone. £100.00 to £150.00 depending where you get it from.
Covered this one some time ago abart checking the oil level. Do a search and you'll find it.
 
is that location for a 1999 4.0? as i was under the impression it was one of the front rads ,just checking,
gonna be going outside soon pity about the weather

hi all ,well bad news ,it looks like i now need a new autobox cooler,as it looks like its leaking brown oil is it a bad sign being brown?? its not playing up changing gear or anything ,
can anyone tell me the procedure for changing this, parts wise,i have the cooler and pipes part numbers,but will i need to change the gearbox oil and filter and gasket and drain plug etc

well before i buy all my bits this week i was wondering what bolt and where it is on the gearbox so i can undo to see if the oil inside is brown or red,can i do this ? and will i need a new bolt and washer to replace it.??????
just trying a little fault finding process before i burn all my money,

Should be a drain plug on the sump pan with a copper washer. The copper washer should reseal o.k. after you have taken your sample. A new washer should come with the service kit-the plug should be o.k. unless the hexagon is rounded off badly.
 
After you have changed the oil etc. and you want a second opinion on the state of the box, suggest you take a trip up the M1, seeing you are in North London to Ashcroft Transmissions in Luton/Dunstable. Kevin Ashcroft is the dogs b*****x on Range Rover Auto and Transfer boxes-give him a ring first if you need to 01582 496040.
