Purchased a Defender 90 in Spain recently, its a 1998 with one owner and have bought it directly from the guy. He bought it from new at a Land Rover main dealer in the Uk , so was UK registered etc prior to him taking it to Spain 15 years ago.
I am now trying to register it in the UK, do I put the original number back on it ie use this fir the new MOT etc ? Do I need a certificate of conformity ?

Logic would say you should not need one as the car was registered new in UK so must conform when new, but not always any logic in this, I know people that have taken cars back to the UK and they have just been given the old reg No back, will you have to pay tax on it when it goes back to UK?
 
Hi Ian, thanks for that, I will try and check this and will see if the old reg number shows up anywhere, if it does then Bingo ! DVLA are absolute shockers at answering the phone 'no doubt COVID' excuse as with everything ! Thanks

What's the status of the old uk plate? Is it sorn or non existent?
Land rover should confirm by the vin that it was produced in UK for the domestic market, ie not an export if dvla don't have any idea

Many thanks, I have looked on the DVLA 'is my car mot'd' and its original number plate has been recognised as the correct vehicle, so imagine that a good sign. ,
But not sure if this is sufficient to have a V5 produced so I can tax etc, many thanks Peter

Was it actually exported? Maybe you just need a v62 to get a new v5?
 
Hi Rob here from Algarve is the vehicle still in Spain if so you need to fill in a NOVA form before exporting it back to UK as it's been matriculated in Spain

That wont work unless you know original reg plate...
 
Nah another one in Spain with a dodgy vehicle..
How do the spanish treat the '90 on a tax exempt chassis, with series 2 vin plate' type vehicles? Are they against the rules and taken oft the road like the uk does... or ignored?

They wont matriculate it...but the OP is asking if he brings it back to UK can he use the same reg...after 15yrs out of UK what do you think?...was it exported and matriculated to Spanish plates?...every day we get UK plate cars at the garage asking for help and the answer is no we cant help and even before Brexit your car should not be on the road here as it's been out of the UK over the limit and your permanent address is not on the V5 and not on your insurance certificate...

Not sure. I think he will need to talk to the dvla as he has a specific case. With it origionally being uk spec, I would guess it won't be a problem to return it. Will need registered again. Gaydon motor museium can help confirm build date, spec and market it was first sold in.
