Cant find the timing pin. help needed

Hi mate, just in the process of changing my belt. Had a hole in mine but no notch. Started a thread on it, eventually found it up the side on the engine back plate... I know yours is not the same and that you have done it now but it might be worth a look for future reference if you do the belt again you can see where mine was here http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/timing-belt-change-auto-241550.html
I did line it up with the arrow before hand but after putting the pin in I realized I would have been half a tooth out on the crank. All the best with any other problems your having :)
 
Cheers for the advice. It all fired up first time. But there is still a bit of white smoke on starting and seems a little down on power. Needs investigating.

If the timing is slightly out that can cause it to run rough.... White smoke is water usually, which if the car drowned could just be residual in the exhaust, also old fuel tends to be more smoky if its been sat for a while. Has it been on a nice long run to get everything nice and hot since the 16th?

Also cleaning the intercooler etc will help...
 
It hasn't been on a long run but will get one Friday. I havemt done any of those things bit they are added to my list. Cheers again

Cool :cool: I haven't done mine yet or should I say I haven't got round to looking at it yet. I'm hoping it hasn't been done as before I took it off the road it was sluggish off the turbo to say the least....
 
if its smoking and sluggish, timing is slightly out, it will need advancing slightly get the timing right before tweaking the pump.
 
There was one on the pulley but it didn't match up with the key in the shaft. I used the key to dontje timming as the pulley was off
 
I don't think it's meant to line up with the key in the crank shaft, if that is what you are saying. It's meant to line up with a marker on the timing chest and sits at about 11 o'clock from the key.

Once you have it all back together you can line up the pulley with the TDC marker and then push a pin into the injector pump.
 
So is that picture showing where the line should be when setting the timming. I had the key at 12 o'clock when I set it
 
No, I think you are getting confused here. The key will be straight up, that is where TDC will be. When it's all apart you line up the key with the arrow, put the belt back on whilst lining up the cam and injector pump pulleys and then set the tension on the cam belt. Then rotate it a couple of times to make sure you aren't a tooth out. Then put it back together.

But as you may still have timing issues and you don't have a hole in your flywheel housing to lock the flywheel your only way to set TDC is to line up the cranky pulley with the TDC mark to the marker on the timing chest. Then when this is lined up you can check the pump timing through the hole in the injector pump.

Does that make sense?

you wont believe how many times Ive watched that at least a few before and whilst I did it. It was the lack of pin that through me. The way I see it I lined it all up as best as I could, but this could still be perhaps a degree or two out. without the pin to lock it I don't know I could get it any better.
tbh my dad drove it since and he didnt notice any difference. its so marginal it might just be that because the thought crossed my mind I'm now worrying over nothing. This is where my lack of experience lets me down. But I'm proud to have done it all myself, with a little help from you guys. Having never done any work on a car past fitting a radio
 
Can't believe it. I broke down again last night. Annoying thing was I'd driven 350miles and it was literally a mile from home. Didn't look pretty under the bonet. Photos to come later.
Why didn't I get a transporter van?
 
I was driving back from Derbyshire the engine temp was up near the red but wasn't climbing. As I came off the motorway the oil light flashed on off repeatedly under braking. Got to the top of the sliproad and it cut out. It started again I think because I was still rolling. Next roundabout the same except it wouldn't start. Got a tow from my dad. Linking thismorning the engine bay is full of oil and she won't start. I've got the battery on charge but I don't know what caused it.
