Can this chassis rot be welded/is it an MOT fail?

Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows how much of a chassis can realistically be plated over? I have uncovered some terrible rot on mine and it has eaten away around an entire section. I have already had one side plated and now need the opposite side and the bottom doing. Is that too much? Also, correct me if im wrong but i take it that this would be an MOT fail if left as is?

Definately a mot failure if left like that but not beyond repair, get it plated back to good metal but remove the wiring loom first.

Definately repairable that.

I've seen some replace virtually 100% of the chassis, and call it a repairable chassis.

That would fail an MoT and can be repaired however....

If you go down the route of repair be prepared to do similar work further down your chassis year after year after year....

Might be time to start thinking about a Galv chassis.

Will work out cheaper in the long run.

Thanks for the replies. I have been drooling over Pressbrakes xmembers for a while. Now i know it can be done I just need to get this patched then MOT etc so i can drive down to Essex to have it fitted. If im having it done it may as well be by the man himself. Anyone know how much he is charging these days?

weld it you will get a few more years out of it yet, iv just done my 90 other month

I have just had some repairs done to my chassis - the front has been repaired and a new rear 1/4 chassis fitted, I asked the bloke if it will need more work done in the future but he told me it will be good for another 20 years!? And a new chassis wasn't economically viable!?

Well lets see :scratching_chin: You replaced the back quarter and repaired the front half ............. what makes you think the middle isn't rotten or soon to be???????????

What year is it? and what is it

I had one fitted yesterday by Clive at Pressbrake yesterday, if you still have an MOT i wouldn't bother patching it would be a waste of money if your going to get one from Pressbrake.
Takes a whole day to fit so you would be looking at an early start if your comming from Liverpool.
You should contact him at "sales at blacksheepoffroad.co.uk" with your pics he should be able to give you a price.

His work is perfect and it would be well worth the drive having looked at pattern replacements, you wouldn't be dissappointed. If you want some pics of his work let me know?

Looks like a typical chassis I see every week!
The trouble is the double skin capillary action sucking the water up, just check for swelling on the chassis showing the corrosion has spread inside.
I loaded myself up with pain killers yesterday(im injured) to do the x member so I dont fancy doing one for a week or two:(

Because my man assures me it isn't and that's good enough for me.

A new chassis would have blown my budget taking into account everything else that needed doing. As long as I get another few years out of it.

Hope you are feeling better soon Clive, I am in the unfortunate position of having the MOT expired so I'm gonna have to get this patched before I can arrange a trip down to you anyways. Hopefully I'll be able to get everything sorted in the New Year.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
