thanks shifty and others

Basic economics , need to make ten a week but only doing 4 or 5 a month then you loose buying power so steel goes up
Also ive made over a thousand by hand and fitted nearly 500!! Ive saved quite a few from the scrap

Been offered job at a porsche restorers hand making bodies:D

Porsche bit sounds good, best of all its the other guys job to get the work, all you have to do is turn up on time (a really rare thing indeed these days) do whats put in front of you and not bitch about it (another rare thing), have a laugh and go home with zero worries.

I hope he doesn't stop all together! I really want one when funds permit as I've heard he will put a winch tray in as well! All the best with porsche tho bud!

My whole reason for wanting one was as they were supposed to have crush tubes for towing in ? But it doesn't look like they have ?

Update just chatted with clive, as its 6mm steel crush tubes are not necessary, I think it would have to be in excess of 30 tonne to fold them on torque.. I recall Dixon Bate is 240 or something silly NM for towbar torque.

how much to galvanise it?

Most places have a minimum charge, mate was getting some cappings done so min charge was 90 quid and we went halves.
I reckon its worth the whole 90 quid on its own just to save any future issues ever again.
I would bet if you advertised a few people could easily get enough gear together to make it even cheaper each, especially on one of the series forums

Just to update, My Landy was taken to Clive, as the last guy had put so much of an extension on the cross member previously it was too difficult for me to fit one of his cross members on my own.... it was right up to the rear Springs. Clive has done the lot... Superb.. Not just that it appears the previous owner had ground through some shocking back load area supports to fit the last cross member and clive strengthened this all up.. I am so happy.. I was expecting to spend weeks painting and fitting electrics and tow kit back but Clive did the lot.. I couldn't recommend highly enough and I am never easily pleased.

It cost a small fortune.. Not from Clive but from getting it to him, train back and again to pick it up..... But it gave it a good run... NO DIFFERENCE in price despite having to rectify the last silly bugger who "had a mate who was a welder"... So thank you Clive...

thanks for the comment, halfway through the job I started to wish my pal had not let md borrow his workshop and I had ignored your pleas for me to mend it for you!

I've done a few jobs like that. You wish you'd never started but have to get it done. I thought I'd have a go at rendering my house and it turned into a two week bollock ache. Should have just paid the bloke who quoted me to do it as it would have cost about the same but been done in half the time.

Just a thought Clive. Have you thought about buying knackered defender doors and re-framing and skinning them and banging them out on an exchange basis? The channel and skins are cheap and there are few places to get repairs done without big bills and new doors are stupid money. You wouldn't need masses of space but it could prove quite lucrative for making some extra dosh for you.
