auto vs manual

but with the auto you can vary the torque you put down at the wheels so you dont spin the wheels or select gear or go bollocks out if you want

All depends if you know how the car works.

I stand by a manual (with a knowledgeable driver) will always perform better than a auto. If you are unsure, off road, then go for a auto

To
do prefer autos myself. they just put the power down predictably off road. and you never find yourself in the wrong gear going uphill.

Where is the fun it that? Get to know your car and how it works, then go where the auto amatures dare not!

To
im not sure you understand how torque and wheel slip are connected

As I said, I've had both. I understand fully how to get a Disco moving in mud, and it's always been easier in a manual than a auto.

Sand, dust or other might be different, I can only comment on what I use a Disco for.

I have manual discovery 2 and I would only recommend a manual if the owner has spent his whole life body building, the clutch is so heavy that if you drive in heavy traffic your left leg will feel dead when you get out.Its fine on motorways or in the country but if you are going to drive in heavy traffic forget it and go for a auto.

Only if you are a girl or a wimp

I do, always have done unless driving in snow on a hill which is very rare nowdays, one of my other cars has a position to enable me to use the steering wheel paddles which I tried just the once or twice, don't see the point that of selecting manual gear unless on a track.

You're not using your vehicle to it's full potential then.

There's plenty of occasions when going up hill it's better to knock it back into third rather than allow the box to change up into top or use the kick down.
There's no inhibitor between 4th and 3rd for this very reason.

So this morning i went and checked a 97 300tdi auto out all seemed good for the price rust in the normal places but not to bad drives fine so i bought it.:D
Just need some time to give it a closer inspection then the project can begin.
Took it to a lake/pit local to me an got it muddy all seems good.

get the fluid changed as well as trans filter. And raise the vent tube and tape the fill stick for the trans to prevent water does not get in. If you get water at that level it will get sucked in

All fluids and filters are on the first todo list, wot involved with raising fill stick? Or will this become obvious once i get under it.
New to landys so get ready for stupid questions feel free take the **** of my poor knowledge.

just put a bit of silicon on the bonnet/cover of the dip stick where you pull it out of the tube mentioned in number 10 of the link have a look and if it helps you all the better. And the V8 guys might want to look

True not to it's full potential, but just for what I need as I do with other vehicles :D

V8s don't slow down on hills I don't :) but if I ever did want a lower ratio I'd slow down let the box drop into the ratio it thinks suitable.

What is wrong in the box moving up to forth ratio and lock-up going up a hill ?.

After 26 years of LR V8 autos I do know my way around, and that there's no restriction in selector movement therefore no need to press the button when moving between D and 3 positions on the selector, unlike position 2.

Also that position 3 includes first second and third gears, so moving into position 3 could place u into any of these ratios depending on the vehicles speed at the time.

Advice needed 300tdi auto
After a day in the mud water and sand got gear change/ power issues
Driving home it didnt wana change up to 4th few miles later it did then few more miles when slowing down wouldnt change up to 2nd that was yesterday now thismorning will change up through all gears fine then randomly revs will drop if i floor it it sometimes picks up and changes but rev counter fluctuates
Kinda hard to describe so any advice as to what could be much appriciated
Also when cold its always (since i had it 6wks) not liked changing to second until warm, from wot i read and search sounds like governor
Cheers

check oil for contamination ,as you should with all axles ,swivels ,t/box ,wheel bearings, not changing till warm is usually governor issue ,sometimes a good clean is enough to fix it sometimes replacement, rev counter flucuating will be poor contact at w terminal or alt has got mud in it

was goin to change oil just wanted to check first as iv read changing can sometimes make things worse however understand needs to be done after poss water contamination
Cheers for quick reply read many of your posts always a great help

if box is old and worn and has seldom had oil changes fresh oil can bring on governor problems ,but not changing oil isnt going to keep box going trouble free for long , to get at governor you need to remove t/box and remove rear housing ,this can be done without touching main box or draining oil

From what i can tell by receipts its been looked after and had oil changes.
Just not sure if the problem iv had is todo with the problem now or if its different but need to start somwhere so do u think change oil first check condition of it then look at gov and go from there?
