auto vs manual

Never done much motorway driving in mine, so can't really comment, bar that my 300tdi will happily hold its own at 40mph plus in fifth (max I do is about 80mph), so can't really see the benefit of an auto.

As for cruise control, only "had" that on my V8's and it never friggin' worked anyway. Had a Galaxy with cruise and found it pretty much unsusble in the UK, but great in France, Italy, Germany where you can go more than two miles without having having to apply the brakes!

Yes, bear in mind I'm in Switzerland :)

That said, I had a mate with a manual Tdi Disco 1, and when it hit a hill with the CC on all that happened was clouds of black smoke.

You can't bump start an auto if you get a sticky starter or low battery. Your not supposed to tow an auto. And you get through more brake pads

you can tow it as far and fast as you like with t/box in neutral, you tend to find brakes in better condition on autos especially rears

Auto's are for girls, yanks and men who don't understand the relationship between revs, torque and speed. Only a manual will give you full control and flexibility.

I've had both, obviously the auto is better around town, but that was about it's only advantage.

girls and yanks ?theres more control of torque and speed at wheels with autos

Didn't know you were in Switzerland, you want to pop over here and see how useful cruise control is - you'll be making more use of your handbrake!!!

I can't see cruise working well in a series 1, the engine is just rough, in my opinion.

for the really steep stuff you do have hill descent if you want it

How does this work? My last auto would always descend faster than the manual discos.

Personally I like the manual for the better (more controlled?) engine braking when descending but that's about it. The auto is better for day to day driving and just as capable off road.

Basically OP get the best disco for your budget and worry more about the rusty part between the bumpers and engine than what box it has. I have been doing a lot of looking recently and bought another auto import since there are lots of 'solid' discoveries advertised but only a couple that actually were and I got sick of looking at overpriced tat.

I only left the UK 10 years ago, so I know what the roads are like ;). That said, if the motorways are as stop-start as you say, it's another reason to get an auto!

Driving from the south to Lancashire I can go 95% of the way, on motorways, in fifth without touching the gear stick. So can't see the benefit. My point was you can cruise the motorways without changing gear, but cruise control is a non-starter.

Most of my driving is country lanes, farm tracks and fields, a auto box would be pants and expensive on fuel.

It's horses for courses. And I've never met a farmer (I know a few) with a auto Landy, no matter the model. Do you use your Land Rover for what is was made for, or for crusing motorways, I guess that will determine your gear box choice.

Ever found yourself in sand in the wrong gear? With a manual you dip the clutch and by the time you have selected the correct gear, you have come to a halt. An auto simply changes down for you without losing momentum. And your clutch arm won't have a hole rubbed through it. Having owned several of both, auto gets my vote.

No, not much sand in the M4 corridor! Always found manual better in mud though. I choose the revs, diffs, ratio and gear selection for the circumstances, auto box wasn't as aware to what was in front in front me as I was!

do prefer autos myself. they just put the power down predictably off road. and you never find yourself in the wrong gear going uphill.

but with the auto you can vary the torque you put down at the wheels so you dont spin the wheels or select gear or go bollocks out if you want

Guess it depends on whether you are driving the disco or hoping it's going to drive you.
