Pieces of turbo/shaft in the engine. get a borescope in there. the metal will be like you swallowing razor blades......

My 300tdi still did 70mph easily, all the way down from edinburgh with a buggered number 4 piston.

More like the piston wasn't really held onto the conrod.
The piston was intact but could be wiggled side to side with my fingers.
I have come across a couple of 300tdi's with melted pistons though.
Still we go back to it sounds shagged and wants some surgery, save yourself some pain- pull the engine and fit a new one- hell the tax payers get screwed for everything else a recon lump is peanuts by comparison
