your ear pressed to a long handled screwdriver or using a mechanics stethescope may help narrow things down without stripping the engine if the compression test comes up clear.

what engine ?were tappets out when reset what are actual symptoms ,does it alter if you slacken each injector in turn

Yep but it could have been the old turbo causing the glitter effect. If that was the case it should be starting to cause some serious wear shortly.
