Are Big Fat Tyres Better, Or Are They More For Looks?

i had a set of 265/75/16 colway muds and they were absolute ****e. just clogged up. then got some good old mud pluggers, excellent all round tyre and good at cotting through mud.
now have 750 diamonds, best tyre i've had so far. excellent at cleaning.
and a set of 265/70 for the road. 300bhp 90 on road tyres is very good fun!!

i got 7.50 16's with mud pattern.
brilliant all round tyre.
those big wide tyres just slip and slide all over the shop.

What kind of terrain are you spending most of your time on? My understanding is that the best tyre for mud is different to the best tyre for rocks. The best tyre for sand is different again.

To be honest I believe that the best thing you can do is get some experience driving off road on your chosen area and learn techniques from the more experienced people you go out with. Great tyres are really only a good tool for a good driver. I would not consider myself to be a great off road driver... but most of what I do know I learnt using standard sized all terrains.

I took my RRC to Brick Kilne Farm last weekend and was pleasantly surprised at what the old thing could do, i think i prefer greenlaning though as i managed to beat the old girl up quite a bit, i have been up salisbury plain quite a few times and never really had any problems with my tyres losing traction just the diffs grounding out mainly in big ruts, with all the help ive had from you guys i have now decided to get some 750/16 mud terrains for the extra height as i think these will do me just fine for greenlaning. thanks guys.
