Another snapped timing belt!

When the piston is at the top of its travel there in only a couple of millimetres between it and the closed valves.

One piston will hit the first substantially open valve that it meets.

How loud the bang will be depends on the revs being used and how far the offending valve is open at the time.

Thank you boguing is that how rockers snap? when the piston hits the valve and pushes the rocker up - causeing the rocker arm to be pushed up by the valve and the pushrod at the same time?

Cheers tom.

All back together now and running better, it was the valve clearence on the new rocker - it was out.

I can't believe how tough theese 200 tdi engines are!

I also can't believe how I can hate something and also love it to bits at the same time LOL!

Yes, but it can also bend a pushrod or break a cam follower. The valve stem may bend (can be hard to see but will need changing) and the piston can be damaged, or if you're really unlucky a broken bit can get somewhere else and do more damage. I had a belt slip on a 200tdi and bent one valve, one pushrod and broke a follower, so it isn't always a complete disaster.

I'm afraid that the head really needs to come off to check the valves. A slightly bent one won't seal very well, but may eventually snap, giving you a much bigger headache.

This is how the pushrods ended up looking

And the snapped rocker...

Looking at the pics would you recon a valve could have been damaged?

Would you recommend removing the head and checking?

Cheers.

put it back together and set tappets watch each valve opens and shuts smoothly

It's all back together and iv been driving it today. They all lift smothly but something is different when driving - sounds a bit different.

Edit. Tappers not set yet I'm just waiting for feeler gauges to arrive.
