aluminium in line thermostat fitted !!

Hi all,
I have just finished last weekend fitting the aluminum in line thermostat mod so favored by the Rover 75 guys, so I thought that I would share my experiences about fitting it to my 2004 TD4, I bought the one in the pic from "specialistcomponents" on the bay for £58 and it has a 88deg stat in it.
The fatter end of the of the unit (engine side) is quoted as 1and a half inch...38mm diameter, and the other end (radiator end ) 1 and a quarter inch..about 32mm.
TBH I was a bit scared about cutting the top hose because I wasn't sure of the internal diameter of it and if the unit would fit into it, so it was a slice and see ! so armed with a large sharp kitchen knife ( better for a straight cut) I sliced a 6cm piece out of the hose..see pic, then inserted radiator side of the unit into the hose, perfect fit !
But trying to get the engine side into the hose was a struggle (very tight), I had to take the hose off the engine and take it inside to soften it, eventually it went on.
If I were to do it now I would buy the unit with the 33mm outlets on both ends that he also sells.
so now the gauge sits at 12 o'clock solid and the heaters feel really hot.
The unit does radiate a bit of heat so watch your fingers !! Will monitor it over the next few weeks, the only problem I can see is that it sits slightly over the top of the oil filter casing so might be a slight problem when I come to change the oil in 6 months.....we will see.

Please could you tell me if yours is an Auto or Manual as mine is a td4 2002 Auto and was thinking of getting one.
I have read that there might be a difference in the amount of room between engine and radiator.

mine is a manual, and I think your auto has an extra pipe coming from the engine side, so long as you have 6cm gap you can cut out of the hose, you should be okay, put some pics up of your pipes if you can.

Here are some pics,I do not know why the top hose is in two parts I never noticed it before.
looking at your pics, why cant you fit it in where the joins are in pic 1 and 2 ?
just undo them and slot the unit there ? why is the join in the hose there ?

Do you leave the current thermostat in place when fitting this?

If yes, if the current one is still operating, does it not cause a problem?

This is a quick fix if your original one is stuck open (like mine was) and you don't want to spend a days labour trying to swap it. If the original is working o.k. there is no benefit.

TBH I looked at this method and the Renault stat in the pipe method. Plumped for the renault. It cost me £7.83 delivered from Europarts (now £5.59 with free delivery) and took me about 20 mins to fit. I figured if there was a problem I could quite easily remove it and hadn't cut the pipe (New pipe about £35 if you cock it up?). Its been in about a month now and on a recent 400 mile trip to Cornwall the temp gauge sat at 12 o'clock and didn't budge. Works great.

I to tried to fit the renault one in the hose but just couldn't get it in that's why I went for the other one, works for me....BTW I still have the stat I bought sitting in my garage if anyone needs it.

my original thermostat is stuck open like they all do, so you can still put another one in line, and no it doesn't cause any problems....loads of Rover 75 owners have done it for years and reported no probs that I know of.

Yes, but my thermostat is still working but I don't get as much heat from the heater as I think I should.

That is why I would perhaps do this if it didn't cause any problems.

My heater was really pathetic, hardly felt it but now hot! and my gauge sat between 10 and 11 o'clock on the dial, if yours does not sit at 12 o'clock after a short while then your thermostat has probably stuck open. Worth changing your thermo one way or the other.
 
Mine does sit at around 12 o clock, but it does take some time to get there although much quicker this time if year.
I must try flushing the heating system as my heater does not get very hot in winter.

Hi did you remove hose before fitting thermostat?
 
Why would you buy a thermostat housing with different sized flanges to go in a radiator pipe of uniform diameter?
because "flat" I mistakenly thought that the hose had a different diameter at one end...what a plonk eh, but it works great anyway.
 
Thanks "thebluemax" it was just a simple question - I was wondering whether it was a thing to do with flow with an inline thermostat, that's all.
 
I know the original post is a bit old now, but I have just ordered the aluminium in line thermostat mod from "specialistcomponents"
on the bay for £58. I ordered the one with 33mm outlets on both ends that includes 88c thermostat, which they specify is for the TD4.

I assume the hardest part will be getting clean cuts on rubber hose, but apparently applying dish cleaner soap to blade helps reduce friction while cutting through rubber.

Thanks to 'thebluemax' for info. My TD4 has all the symptoms previously described.
