The engine and box are so short that it can sit very low and far back in the chassis, Rover V8's have to be high to clear the oil pump over the front axle .

As I once found out after installing my v8 for the first time. It still had the 8" filter which was fine on road. But the first front axle of the ground at a play day had it knocked off when I landed. Fortunately the housing was fine and a trip to local auto spares and I had a 4" replacement and a gallon of oil. And all was well after that. As I had a 6cyl chassis I did not need the remote

Don't under estimate how important weight is.
I used to organise some off-road days for a main dealer, back in the days when P38's we current.
I laid out a 20 gate trials course for customers to drive, on their first run round they were entered in a competition and the best drivers got a free trip to the Land Rover experience. Strangely enough it was always a P38 that won.

Well one year it was wet and on the course there was a steep grass hill with a garage marked out half way up (drive into and reverse back down) and not many disco's defenders or RR could get into the garage (a few did).
A mate turned up in his Zook SJ (blasphemy I know) and I could drive it to the top of said hill every time no prob. the only reason was weight.
You may like to remember that when building your off-roader.

Ouu interesting, thanks. So i can compete in my Series in a leaf class :) Although as it has a 200di lump in it i guess i'd have to be in the modified class

I think you my be ok in standard class with a 200di but don't quote me.

That didn't work too well.
It says that in standard class 2.25 litre engine can be replaced by

Rover 80 2.25 litre car engine, or normally aspirated 2½ litre diesel.

My series 1 was going to have a 2.25 but thats still classed as a modified motor. I think they are trying to change the regs but will take 2 or 3 years to get passed. You can really really tune a 2.25/2.5 although its silly heavy!

Not keen on tdi's myself in a comp car. Perfect for a tow motor daily driver or greenlaner (i have one)! All the 8's made 3 of the 4 climbs for the team recovery at some point. The tdi although looked to be wound up only made 2 of them simply run out of revs and oomph as there was very little run up. Always good to see the trialers do the technical bits with ease but the comp motors with way stiffer suspension using alot more right foot just before they wave their wheels in the air.

Go on go on do it! Do it!! ill be playing leaf springs!! In my wreck!

When / where is the next event? Can people just come along and watch? Probably better to get an idea as a spectator before jumping straight in with the series, but, it is definitely something which interests me :D

Where abouts are you? under my landy doesn't help lol!!

do you have a std bumper aswell??

hmm... good point. We've recently relocated from Derbyshire down to Northamptonshire... so... err... Northamptonshire! :)

I have a standard Bumper (although it is off a 2007 110, but, the design hasn't changed in 50 years!) but i have a winch tray sat on top of it with a winch on.

Your not far away at all!!

Right good news and bad news:

A 90 bumper gives you an advantage as it does not stick out so far forwards......................me I don't mind but if they ever measured up you may well be told your not allowed to play. I'm sure the club I'm with it will be fine will allow you but enter the nationals or an interclub rtv where there is some serious lads you may well be asked questions. As you have a winch which sticks out I see no issue but other may. I got a few Q's about lack of rear tailgate more flex in the body apparently (which makes no odds to me im not that good)!!

Secondly you would need a propper tow point at the front a tow ball is fine.

Good news: well come and have a go!! I think we're at roundhill Tring Herts (bit of a trek from you but very good site) but not until the end of July Hopefully if I get my ass in gear and the weather stops ****ing on me i'll be there in the series 1

Awesome... well... putting a series bumper back on is no problem at all... i just bent it on a tree and a friend had a spare defender one lying around. Didn't realise it sticks out less!

Proper tow point... makes sense... it's been on the "to-do" list for months.

Tring is only an hour or so away, nothing at all, i'm used to driving all over the country.

Thanks for links, i'll take a look :D

I don't think you can beat a std well setup series. serious fun cheaply and plenty of people on hand. The social side of it is a right laugh the beer tent and the bbq's after a good days competing takes alot of beating espceially when you have stories of each others silly cock ups and amazing clears!
