Just wanted to say a massive thanks to @pwood999 for the info sent - was invaluable both now and future (I'm sure!)

In the end, turned out to be as simple as the compressor not having the guts anymore. I disconnected the primary air line whilst everythign was running and attached to an external workshop compressor and she went and levelled out in moments. I think the PO had been buggering about with settings though so in time I'll have to mess about with recalibration. I went from one extreme to the other - low on the stops to being so high in full wading ride (normal mode selected) I could barely climb in! But - now fully driveable again and on to the steering issue......
