Hello 😊 I'm looking for some general advice.

I've always been a Range Rover owner - Classic, p38 now a l322. Ive loved all of them anfld I'm considering going for a 405 next, but it will be used as a work horse and I'm worried I'm going to trash it! It will be used for towing mostly and other trucks ive tried just don't compare. I've been seriously contemplating moving away from the Range Rovers and getting something I can feel less guilty climbing into covered in mud but I think ive spoilt myself and am going to struggle to find something I like. Has anyone else made a move? Any suggestions? Will need to tow 3.5ton. Or is a 405 a good idea 😊

Depends what you want. Nothing wrong with an L405, although IMO the modern RR's (well all modern Land Rovers) just feel and drive like tall & heavy estate cars. But that seems to be what the market asked for. Personally I prefer 4x4s to feel and drive like... well a 4x4.

L405 is bigger than an L322 which is good or bad depending on your take or where you are. If you like and have an L322, then the L405 would seem a natural progression.

A Land Cruiser would be my preference for the reliability.
We only get the Prado in the UK. At least for the past 20 years.

The old model stopped last year has to be about the fugliest car ever built. Truly dreadful looking. Also plastic fantastic inside too. Not saying they aren't ok vehicles. But man do they look boring and ugly. Would never be a vehicle you'd smile at as you walked towards it, or give a glance back when walking away from.

Parkers also says 3 tonne towing, not 3.5, they also have pretty lame engines by modern standards.

The new Prado looks a lot better on the outside, although still very boring and drab inside. They do tow 3.5t now, but also super lame engine for 2025. Suspect you'd need a calendar to measure 0-60mph. Plus they are horrendous money........ well in the UK at least.

If you want to feel ripped off and unappreciated, buy a new Land Cruiser in the UK.

Also not 100% convinced on the reliability front. Toyota have had major engine issue recalls in the USA, plus snapping chassis issues on their full size trucks.

If you get into your L322 with muddy boots what difference does a number make?

The 2011 TDV8 was pretty much the test drivetrain engine and box for the 405, the SDV8 basically. But they gave many engine options because of the weight saving. Don’t. Know why they put the V6 in either :vb-groan2:

But I am sorry a 2L in a 405 is just not right, and can’t see it towing very well.

You don’t say what you have (year, engine) but if you are happy with it why change?

Yes I know what you mean, all very car like now. I like the bigger vehicles, so good that its bigger and like the fact they are heavy on the ass end u like some pick ups. Might go and see if I can test drive one 😊

Because the l322 is already trashed and been used as a work horse for many years. Getting something newer, cleaner and more money does make me think twice. I have a 3L 54 plate, but needs alot of work to keep it on the road. It pulls well and the engines been good. Just suspension and rust is now the problem.

Don't go for a light interior, get yourself some rubber mats and a load mat, plus maybe some seat covers.

But a luxury interior will always be more vulnerable feeling. I have a p38 Range Rover with a nice interior. And fairly tidy outside. It is worth way less than the Ninety, but somehow feels wrong to take the p38 down a lane where it might get scratched or getting in it when you are all grubby having done a days corn cart or messing about under a vehicle and all covered in oil.

What engine would you be looking at? The 4.4 TDV8 is probably the cream of the crop, although the Supercharged 5.0 V8 is the fastest. But the TDV8 is no slouch, it is seriously rapid.

I guess a middle ground if you want more utility would be to look at a Disco 4.

It feels wrong doesn't it! Mines cream and I feel terrible but its so muddy at the moment I'm never clean getting into it 🤦‍♀️
Yeah I think the 4.4? A little more forgiving on the insurance but still quite a bit more than the l322. Have been looking at a couple other options but I feel a traitor. The Ford Ranger, 3.2 without wet belt and a toureg, but I need to do some more research on both and neither are really pulling me in.

I think Land Cruiser reliability went down shortly after they started fitting air suspension to them!

Lexus are reasonably priced second hand. Not sure what they're rated at for towing. Possibly limited by no low range. Never seen one with a tow-bar.

So you have a 3.0 straight 6 diesel l322? Damn good workhorses but 4.4 is far superior. You could always look for an l322 with less miles on it, or an l320 ain’t shabby with the Tdv8 neither
Yes its been great but rear ends now rotted out. I keep looking out for another l322 but alot seem to have the same problem or done alot more miles than mine. Half thinking its better the devil you know but the garage quoted 4-5k and I still have suspension problems that wasn't included. Equally there's a smart l320 thats popped up on market place just down the road. Never had much to do with the sports but might be worth a look. Thank you
