Adding an aux input

I would like to add an aux input to play my music of my phone on the standard HK system. I would like to keep the CD changer and not use an FM modulator.

Has anyone connected a jack plug to the cassette deck? I have found some links for other units but not a P38, has anyone done this? i thinking about having a go at it.

I know that you say that you don't want to use an FM modulator, but ........ I use the "Audiovox/DICE FMRDS-USB PRO Universal RDS USB iPod iPhone Sirius Car Adaptor" and am very happy with it. It gives me an IPOD/IPHONE interface, USB memory stick reader and aux. jack input and uses the standard radio's RDS display to give track information. It is a wired modulator, rather than a "radio" modulator and good enough quality for me. It costs more than $10, but is non-invasive!

but it still has to connect on an FM signal right? I have one of those kind of things but i gave up with it as I struggle to find a frequency with nothing on it to interfere, even worse travelling through different countries.

Yes, it still uses an FM signal but the car aerial is switched out of circuit automatically when you switch this unit on to avoid interference problems. I have never experienced an interfering signal in over a year's use, and, although I don't live in an urban environment, I do travel close to transmitters.

Ok I never seen this type, how does it wire in to the existing unit?

This is on my list of things to do, but I have more pressing stuff at the moment!

I have service manual for the HK "HiLine" stereo head I can send you if you think it'll be of any use. It's for the Clarion head, not the later Alpine one.

It clearly shows the L and R line inputs from the CD changer. My plan was to cut into these wires and hook up either a aux socket, or wire an iPod charging wire in and just connect the audio connections.

Not sure what effect this will have on the CD changer. I suspect you'd just select CD as the source and switch in the iPod connections. Obviously you would only have volume control from the steering wheel, but I'd be fine with that.

Then I got too big for my boots and thought why not rig up a full USB socket with charging capability too. I hoped I could find a cheap Maplin kit to provide the charging circuit and the D/A converter but I've not managed to yet.

If you want the Clarion circuit diagram PM me and I'll send it over.

They are good those, but my one constantly ejects like it's reached the end of the tape :rolleyes:
I have the same 4 CDs on a loops anyhow so not too frustrating, but it would be nice to work :p

Must admit I'm a previous BMW man, had quite a few and the info available online is enourmous linky: RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog


Have installed both ipod and aux connections on bimers and head units many times similar to LR i.e. clarion, alpine etc. so why not buy the bits from bmw? They have a very good cheap spares department at most dealers:) Never done it on a LR though.

Thanks but I think mine is an alpine unit been a 2000 the cd changer is for sure. I really would like to use the tape deck as I don't even own a tape but I do CDs

How do the BMW kits fit to the unit do you solder then interaly or do they plug in somewhere?

You fiddle a little with the plugs no solder but right into existing plugs, see example: M 3 . M A D R U S S I A N . N E T



On the Realoem site in previous link there's other similar solutions to dfferent types.


BMW sells various kits including a simple aux kit, very easy to plug in but music tracks can only be controlled from device.

Fit it where you like, i used glove box - fair bit of cable on it and comes with instructions.

I personally use this (sold by the garage I use) and I do not regret it! It use the 88.4FM Channel since it is directly connected to the antenna but the sound going out of it is better than from the CD Charger itself!!! I use it with my iPod Classic, iPhone5 (with dongle) and even any Bluetooth devices (Just add this http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-bluetooth-dock-adapter/)

I think clarion will put an aux input on if you ask them, £60 comes to mind, but I may be thinking of something else, any way, you could ask alpine
 
im going to pull my radio out and take a look see if i can make use of the tape function if not will take a look at some of the other options

The arieal fm conectors are good if you get the right one
Mine is by sony ill get the model number when i go out(its origanaly to add a multi changer to standerd headunits) anyhow it blocks the arial input whilst turned on so i set mine to work at 96.3 which is the radio station i listen too, so when i turn the sony on it just starts playing from my phone and blocks the radio signal.
 
well I tried...and failed :(

I couldn't find the correct place to connect I opened the unit and removed the tape deck part but I couldn't work it out, tried listening with headphones where I thought it was but just got some booming in my ear :rolleyes: at this point I decided to quit before I break it.

sounds like these FM connectors might be the way to go, can you use hands free on them?
 
If you are prepared to do without the CD changer (which I wasn't!) there are several more options. For example, there are adapters made by GROM ( Products by SKU ), which plug into the back of the Alpine radio where the CD changer is connected and can then be operated by the steering wheel controls AND can give you Ipod, Iphone, Android phone, Bluetooth connectivity etc.. I have no experience of using them but I expect someone on here will have.
