I took the landy to a wee local tyre place round the corner from work to get some new tyres fitted. When I went to pick it up I was quite pleased to see them tightening the wheel nuts by hand and torquing them up :) none of this air gun ****e

I was quite shocked the D3 only requires 140Nm on the wheel nuts - it's not a lot really.

The garage i used last, well respected local tyre place, did the nuts up so much that when I then got a puncture in Scotland the garage snapped the snap-on socket trying to undo the wheel nut and gave up on me.

I got it off by whacking on a socket, then using a very long bar and a lot of jumping. (i then changed the hub to be on the safe side)

My mate said he couldn't get the ones on his Disco off, I presumed he hadn't eaten all his Weetabix and said I'd do it, ended up using a wheel brace which he held in place with me at the other end of a twelve foot scaffolding tube slipped over it and even the they took some shifting:eek:

To be fair, I had this problem recently after having a tyre fitted at a well known national chain. My problem was down to some #### over tightening the nuts with an air wrench and stripping the threads from the nuts.

That needs new studs then, it's an accident waiting to happen.

And I'd take a look at the seats on the wheels, especially if they are alloys. :(

It's alright he only uses it for driving over kittens puppies and cute baby rabbits he keeps in a field just for this purpose so any collateral damage will only increase his glee:p

i torque my nuts, they are wolf wheels so need to go to 175nm.

i always torque my wheels and then re-check after about 10 miles of driving then about 100miles of driving and i have never had a wheel come off ever.

Not from the nuts anyway, i have had 2 come off after the hubs fell apart (back in uni when i had ****ters and no money for maintenance lol)

either way i weigh 16 stone n if i put my weight behind the brace its gonna tighten

Sorry to hear about the wheel mate, also I must agree with you I'm a mechanic by trade yet I know it's frowned upon but I did my wheels on my d2 up with a large breaker bar and that's it, although I do recheck them almost every week. But that's because I'm paranoid as I had a daihatsu that the wheel escaped from me on.

doc,do you do everything by the book.no you dont.so dont condemn others for something you dont do.;)

this is a safety critical part though ;) and every good tyre shop should tell you to do it anyway if he's just had new ones put on or even if he's just bought new ones its common sense on wheels

check them to see if anythings loose!

yes it is,but YOU dont do things by the book do you,yet you criticise others for not doing it.if you did things by the book you would have had your tratter on the road months and months ago.you said you use a windy gun to tighten your wheel nuts up.i bet you dont re check them when you should either.i know i dont and never had one come off yet.;)

What rubbish :p:p:p

50% of the people driving these days wouldn't even know how to do it. Never once in 35 years driving has ANY tyre place suggested I should do that.

You pay for a service and it should be done right, if its not its the fault of the garage

sue, really you should check the wheel nuts after so many miles tbh.but not many bods do that.;)

i dont believe whats just happened to me i was driving down the road n my steering felt weird i stopped n looked under the car n nothing seemed broken i carried on went round an island i was about a mile from home n suddenly my wheel flew off n fooked off up the rd. ive mashed my wing abit but i got my wheel on i think some1 might have tried stealing it or something because they was all on tight now my indicator flew out smashed n my disk ground flat and all my front wing is hanging off

Same happened to the people who had my disco before me, but it was a garage that messed up. They took the wrong wheel off to start, then realised but only put one nut back on that wheel and ended up giving it back to the customer like it.. They went round a bend n the wheel come off. They was lucky n no one was hurt. I have only just got around to putting a new wing on..

I do :p I look at the wheels and think "they are still there" :D

To be honest the only time a garage didn't tighten mine properly I noticed before the wheel fell off, I could feel the wheel wobbling through the steering.

I have had a wheel come off the trailer, but that was a wheel bearing.

Biggest problem I have on Landys is getting the nuts undone. Have had to call Green Flag a few times, once they couldn't get them off either :hysterically_laughi
