so im about ready to pull my heads off the v8 but that pesky left heat shield wont come off 3 rounded bolts that i cant cut off. so has any one pulled the left head off before with the manifold attached ? looks doable

i should think you can, there's enough space to move the head out with the manifold on. i wouldnt recommend it going back that way though :p

of course, you'll have to undo the stud bolts on the downpipe. they'll probably round off too

yeah looks doable stub bolts i can deal with these ****ty heat sheild ones i cant even reach gonna go look at an air saw n see if i can get in with that right hand bank is off all looked good no gasket leaks its the left one i suspect. liners all good to

right bank head showing good colour

Dremel ! with the reinforced cutting discs.. the flexidrive made it possible to get the manifold to cat studs off the classic and the manifold to cat studs off the porsche. it can fit where an oxy torch air saw or crinding disc cant !

so its taken me longer to get the poxy heat shield off than it did to pull the head but finnally its done, found my leaking gasket

normal place for it to go so it seems the rear cylinder also found it burnt threw a bit giving me that tell tale clue i saw on the out side of the engine originally and the ticking.

all in all a productive day only 1 broken manifold stud sheard right off never mind iv got a pressure tested set of heads being skimmed as i type

Good going Dave. I'll be doing mine in a few weeks i think. It's not leaking or blowing, but figure with 130k on it now.. might as well get it done before a problem occurs and then wont have to get the heads skimmed.

Looks like my gasket i took off. Why make them out of such poor quality materials, or is it a case of all the galleries too close to the bores. Why not make them out of good old copper. As ive taken my heads off 4 times i always put a little copper grease on the manifold bolts to stop them snapping off the next time it comes off, also did the same to those little barstools that hold on the heat shield. Also replaced with large 10mm head bolts with new washers. Heat tape is ok but you have 2 expansion pipes to cover/not to cover
The 90 deg turn is a pain on the head bolts. There is a new digital box ive seen on the bay of pigs that measures torque and angle turned for 50 quid. 1/2 inch either side.
