Hi all,

I recently broke a tooth off of my intermediate gear in my gearbox. Luckily I had a spare gearbox lying around so i took the gear from that one. Though; they are slightly different. Anyone know if its ok to interchange these two? It doesnt seem like it wont fit. But rather im more concerned about how it goes on higher rpms. Thanks!

Left is the one i want to fit, right is the one that came out of the gearbox. Reason i ask this is since the smaller diameter teeth look thicker and there is a noticable steeper angle on all the gear teeth.

What model is your Land Rover? There are several different Series box and each has a different Suffix number/letter. Gears look different to me and so will not do. You could swap the whole transfer box section.

I did some digging, and found out that the suffix C box began in 63'. Also, my bearings are still of the metal kind (on craddock the metal ones go up untill 64') While the plastic kind of bearings came out of my fitted box.

So, am I correct in assuming it wont fit then?

When Land Rover brought out the Series 3 they started the suffix at A again. But now just to cause us confusion the location is on the top edge of the transfer box.
Then there is the issue of what other folk have done in the past with fitting parts and cases from different eras.

Count the teeth, if they’re the same number the intermediate gears should mesh well.
Transfer boxes with the large intermediate pin, suffix B/C onwards had two ratios. 2.354:1 as standard and also a rare option of 2.888:1 that matched that of the suffix A boxes which had the small diameter intermediate shaft. I’d fit and assemble, then feel it’s smoothness of rotation by hand.

How did you break a tooth off that gear do you think? Heavy footed snatch pulling...?
