Aaron's 90 rebuild (round 3)

No need to worry about me pitching up Aaron, rang my mate earlier to ask if he knew anyone who has a welder a bit more locally, only to hear a MIG sizzling away in the background, turns out he's doing a week of welding for another mutual friend so sorted on that front :)

This one seems to be coming along nicely now :D
 
If you're reading this Aaron, check out the thread by A5hl3y about putting a 6BT in a Defender. He wants to know how to do it. You probably know more about this than most people in the country.

No worries, it's only a piddly little thing, I wouldn't want to use if for anything too serious.
And yes it's finally moving along now :) Albeit still slower than I would like, but their is no rush really.

Well I was rained off work today, so got a few hours on it, although I spent more time looking for things than I did actually doing anything :mad:
First job was going to be fitting the centre gearbox crossmember, I found the crossmember out no problem, I then tried finding my bottle jack to spread the chassis legs a little, could I find it? Could I chuff! Spent 2 hours plus trying to find it, tidied the garage trying to find it thinking it my have been hiding under all the crap, nope, was buried in the shed when I eventually found it.
Went to use it and it refused to work :mad: Nothing.. not even when stud upright.. looks like I'll be buying a new one. Bugger!

So I scrapped that idea and dug the peddle boxes, steering column and heater box out for cleaning and painting.



And painted using some Corroless satin black.
Another coat went on shortly after, and will try and do the inside bits better when I get them down.





In other news, I have just bought a td5 style rear plastic fuel tank, kinda pissed about that mind, I sold one last year for about £40 and have ended up paying more than double that for one now :confused:
Any way, the plan is to use that and then use the td5 tub I have got sat in the back yard, something else that has been their for 5-6 years or so, so it's about time I put it to use as I have always put off going down the td5 tank route when it comes down to it.
Just got to find a cradle/guard for it now, although I think Paddocks sell a reasonably priced one, which is galv too..
 
Looks good :) Looks similar to the old series Paisley green.

Thought of going limestone roof and silver cappings with stage 1 V8 grill? Would look a nice combo

You just about read my mind, I was thinking about some sort of offwhite/limestone for the roof, cappings I have had galvanised and will be staying like that.
Stage 1 grill I hadn't thought about, but could be a good idea, it's the sort of thing I'm going for I think. A long way off that stage yet though :eek:

Aye, I did ;) I just kick myself sometimes when I sell stuff and I know I will want it in the future, it's just the way it is.
Although in fairness, I've bought a tank and sender from a tdci for under £100. Now from what I can work out the tdci sender is what I want anyway (same as ROW spec 300tdi)
Well proper VDO senders are £100+ alone, so really it's not too bad seen as I now don't have to buy one.
Question for you James, did you just use rubber fuel hose or something else? Not got it yet and wondering if rubber pipe will even push onto the tank sender hose tails.

Yep, I used rubber fuel pipe (and jubilee clips) I bought off ebay. Though I ended up using a disco (I think) sender in the end as it didn't have the pump in it. Though I have found that the beginning of the red segment on the dial is essentially empty, it started losing power until I switched to the other tank.

Def the right choice going with the td5 tank, the tdi tanks are more trouble than they are worth. When mine corrodes I'm just going to remove it.

Another day on it today, although still slow going.
Got clutch and brake masters bolted back onto the pedal boxes.



And then fitted pedal boxes and steering column to the bulkhead.
Had to drill and tap all the brackets I had galvanised and the bulkhead nut inserts, just makes it a time consuming job overall.
I have also used some self adhesive neoprene foam around all the brackets and pedal boxes (i.e inbetween the bulkhead and pedal box)





Heater box was next in place, but just loosely as I need a new seal for it, but just wanted it out of the way for the time being.



I then did the front to rear brake pipe, and cleaned/painted/fitted brake balance valve.
Usual thing for me and brake pipes, rubber lined p-clips.
This is the only gripe I have with Richards chassis'. No holes for the clips etc..
So you have to drill them yourself after galvanising :confused:
Not sure if this is the original route, nothing to copy off anymore, but from memory it is somewhere near and it isn't going to interfere or hinder anything.





Last job was to get the rear tub out and gave it a thorough wash, both inside and out, it has sat for at least 6 years, so needed it.
Then started scraping all the old crappy underseal off from underneath ready for painting and the galv tub supports fitting.
Tomorrow I am planning to get the tub prepped ready for primmer.
I'd like to say I'll get it in primmer tomorrow too as that would be ideal, but I just don't see it.
 
So yesterdays update, and what a lovely day it was, then sun was a shining! Hopefully this is the start of the weather change :)
Well paint prep was the aim of the day, so theirs not a lot to show their, but I thought I'd best try the cappings on after galvanising, well they still fit so that'll do me and will hold in place nicely once riveted down.

Tub prepped ready for primer.



And the tub is even in primer, as I said above it was a lovely day, so when I was wet sanding it was drying lovely and fast, I'm usually waiting very impatiently for it to do so.
Perfect day for it.



Now in an ideal world this week would go something like follows.
Monday night. Flip tub over and primmer under side.
Tuesday. Top coat and fit new floor supports.
Wednesday and Thursday. Flat primer.
Friday. Possibly paint the inside as I don't have the room to paint inside and out in one go.
But the truth is I probably won't stick to that, I just don't have the energy when I get home from work as much as I'd like to get cracked on.
 
Well that's day one stuck too and the underside of tub in primer.
Can I stick to the rest... Probably not :oops: But I suppose it depends what I'm actually doing at work.

 
All looking good. Glad to see you've got some little friends to help you. Are they new additions to the Morris household?
 
Not interested in the landy anymore - that dog is gorgeous!!!! I need one! Where can I obtain such a pet? Will it stay that cute forever? Is it good with kids? It could come with us in the landy and chew the dashboard and everything:)

It's looking good, Aaron. The weather is, hopefully, on the turn and so no need to rush. I know you like to crack on though. :)
Hard to tell from the pictures, do the cappings sit tight against the body panels? Mine have an annoying gap.
 
There must be two of them. You can see somebody's legs sticking out from under the rear tub as well as the dog in the foreground. So that's twice as cute!

Mine was a bit different as I have both tanks, but I just joined the rear tank to the TDi tank wiring near the front tank via a switch. It works fine with the original gauge as far as I can tell.
