How much do you want for that old bulkhead mate? this weekend i bodged mine so the door works but looking around it the rust is starting to show through the 5mm of solid filler the tw** who sold it me put there...

I don't think its worth trying to patch up as its going to be rotten all the way through.

Not as bad as yours ;)
Off hand I think it wants the foot well patching.
Top is solid
and top corners have been done before. Although not the best. But then again I've seen a lot worse and I like repairs to be invisible so I'm going to say that :)
Will get you some pics if you're interested.

your old one has to be worth 3-400 quid and if you repair it 5-600 quid

I agree mate people would come to you or better still look at doing mobile service , repairs
I would gladly pay you to fit a timing bet kit ect
has to be the way to go mate

All I can say is thankyou for the positive comments towards myself. It's nice to know people would come to me.

I just feel I couldn't get enough custom to make a living (so to speak)
I have thought about it and I know it's what I'd like to do but......

ultimately I haven't got the bollocks to go for it. The fear of failure is massive.
Although I'm only young so times can hopefully change for the better :)

Yours could be fixed. But it would probably be easier to change bulkheads.
It'd want striping down to repair it properly any way.
Not worth f*cking about with filler it's never going to last mate.
I'll pm you some pics over and we can go from there.

You can pick something solid up for £3-400 if not less. So probably £100 or so. Need to look into it before I sell it either way.

no worries mate, Would probably be easier for me to repair a not so far gone one and then swap it this summer rather than try and fix mine, found even more filler in it last weekend.

pm me some pics mate, i can return that tire of yours if i do come up lol

Aaron, noticed you use a lot of Allen Bolts
Where do you buy them from and any particular reason you use Allen over standard Bolts mate?
Thanks

To be fair I haven't used half as many as I did on my last build.

The only reason is that I think they look a bit nicer :D So I'm just going to use them where they're in plain sight. For example rear tub to crossmember.

Usually just go to bapps for bolts (only down the road) screwfix or ebay sometimes.

Not a lot to report today. Been doing a bit of work on my brothers 90.
Some people shouldn't be allowed near cars.

Td5 wheel bearings are different to the early type. Basically you have a selectable spacer. Torque the nut up and stake it.

Any way to the point. There was a fair amount of play in one of the wheel bearings. Had spares in the shed so thought I'd change it. Started stripping it and the hub nut was only on a couple of threads
Could have easily ended in disaster. But it's sorted now.
Obviously I checked the rest after this. And only one was staked. The others was loose but not to such an extent as the other.

So what did I do with mine. Well errrrm not a lot.

Got the rad pack cleaned up and painted. And fitted. So the engine is now all plumbed up as far as I can.

Fair to say the intercooler needed a clean.

No pics of it fitted as I forgot.
So my next job is to get the bulkhead painted so I can get the dash and ancillaries swapped over.
But I can't decide on a colour to paint it. AHHHH HELP :D

I did think blue and then grey and now I haven't got I clue

If it's value you're thinking of I'd go with a standard LR colour , Bonetti Grey or Stornoway look modern

If your compressor isn't up to the job of painting it all in one go you ought to consider renting one that is , you made a decent job of painting the last one, it'd be a shame not to get it perfect for the sake of hiring the right tool for the job

I do admire your determination to get it right and the time you put in, you really ought to consider setting up on your own , now is the time to do it, no dependants or commitments

Nothing to do with value, If I'm honest I'd rather have a non lr colour instead of the same old.
I'll still be painting it in bits. But if it looks **** I'll flat it down and give it another flash over all in one go.

The only reason I have even thought about it is because I'm out of work.
My gaffa is an old #### and I'm not going to work for him forever. So not being qualified in what I do at the moment. I probably wont get another job doing it else where and if I'm honest I haven't got the confidence to do so.

The only other thing I know is working on cars/4x4's. Even then I aint exactly the best. I suppose I'll be a bum when my gaffa retires.
I was out of work for 18months(ish) before I got this job and it's just a vicious circle. Thinking about my future and the prospect of this really does worry me :(

Anyway what I'm trying to say and my thinking is. If I only work 9months of the year in my current job. It could be better than setting up on my own and failing.
As I say it isn't going to last forever but I'll deal with that when it happens.

Go for it mate!

Easier said than done mate. Really wish it was that simple.

So todays job was to start stripping the old bulkhead.

So first things first. I wanted to rip any old added in wiring out.
So I pulled this little lot out :D

Got heater box, clutch, brake and accelerator pedals off and dash half out.

And gone :) Just got to remove steering column, wiper motor and wiring loom and it's done

Now got a few bits to clean and paint.

Oh and rad pack installed.

Well first things first I've ordered my paint :D

So seen as I've ordered my paint I thought I best get the bulkhead sorted.
I have spayed waxoyl in the bulkhead through any and every hole I could :p
Also applied it to the footwells as they get a fair bit of hammer and it's probably better than just painting them.
Oh and gave it a few coats of 2k high build primer.
Just got to flat the primer down and were ready for paint. Well when it comes :)

Also stripped the steering column and wiring loom out of the bulkhead.
And cleaned and painted a few of the ancillaries.

What colour have you gone for? :)

This. Although I don't really like it :( . I had expected it to be a lot darker than it is. Have painted the bulkhead today so I'll fit that and hopefully it'll grow on me. Either that or I'll be doing it again.

your last picture back in the the new chassis with the radiator?

Yeah I can see what you mean. Picture may make it look worse than it is.
I couldn't get it any cleaner than it is.

if you get a metal CV boot clip or something similar, You'll be able to straighten all the fins in your intercooler :)

Looks a good build!
