Hey aaron! what do you clean your parts with? i cleaned up a 72 midget (engine, gearbox) a hew years back and it didnt look half as good as your stuff!

Brake cleaner by the bucket load :p Just to get the oily **** off.
Then use wire brush attachments in the drill to get it back to clean ally

It'd probably be easier to use a degreaser and a jet wash but I haven't got one.
Come to think of it a parts washer would be nice :D
 
So I guess slow progress is the theme of the week.

Selector housing was looking rather raggy. Think I may have a problem wanting everything so clean :eek:

Hopefully I can crack on next week. Got an order from lr direct coming tomorrow so that means I can get the engine built back up.

Then when the gearbox bits come later in the week I'll get that build back up and in.
Then fit any other bits I've cleaned and painted as there's bits all over the shed's garage and garden at the mo.

After that it's a case of striping the old bulkhead and fitting the new (to me) bulkhead.
Still undecided if I want to galv it or not.
 
Aaron what are you using to clean things up and getting into all the corners ect before priming and painting?

Or if I can't get in with a wire brush/wheel a flat headed screwdriver to pick it out.
To be fair though the wire brush attachments get pretty much anywhere.

Probably not the easiest way but that's all I've got.
 
Soooo then, On to todays progress.

Did naff all this morning as I was waiting for my delivery.
Also slightly ****ed off. Ordered some tubular shock turrets last Tuesday. Well they emailed me today to say they haven't got any in stock :mad:
Hay ho I thought. They refunded me. But now paypal have put a hold on the money :mad: Fan####ingtastic

So this turned up at dinner time. And not a blue package in sight :D
Well I tell a lie actually there is. But I'm sure you know what I mean :p

Bearmach gasket sets. Every think I need and more.

Used rtv sealant as well as the gasket as they like to leek between the block and water pump gallery and I don't want to be having the timing chest of again any time soon.

New belt and tensioner.

Set the tension like so. and tighten tensioner bolt.

Turned it over twice and rechecked timing marks.
Refitted timing case front cover, Water pump, pas pump and pipes, alternator, intake manifold and turbo/exhaust manifold.

top job buddy im watching this thread closely as im in the process of saving for a galvy chassis and sourcing all the parts I need, and its a growing list lol

Yeah my list is forever growing. Unfortunately I haven't got a bottomless pit of money. If I bought everything I wanted I'd be skint :eek:
 
So some more bits came today :D Was the gearbox baulk ring I wanted more than anything. But there's a few other bits in there I need.

Anyway before said delivery came I got bored and I wanted to have a proper look in the gearbox :D
Don't know what I was worried about. Mind it's not like I started removing all the gears.
No chipped or damaged teeth so happy days.

With the new and old baulk rings side by side you can see that it's definitely warn. Now got a 55thou gap as apposed to 25thou.

Plus a few other jobs got done. Centre crossmember. put the engine loom in and got the down pipe on.
 
Well it's that time again peeps :)

Not a lot to show, Been a crap day to be fair :(

So first thing was to roll it out side so I can give the garage a bloody good clear out. Sick of not being able to find anything and rolling about in mud on the floor :rolleyes: Wish I had a bigger work space. But at least I'm not outside :)

Put pulleys back on front of engine along with belts. Just need to tart the rad pack up a bit and that'll be the engine and box done. Still need to find a 1.4 transfer box mind.

Pulled the chassis loom through with mi' best fishing rods :D

Made up a set of brake pipes for the rear axle (Used Kunifer as it's betterer :D ) And fitted the flexi's all round.
Oh and the tie wrap will be replaced with a P clip when I get some more ;)

Well today I got roped into doing the gardening :rolleyes:

So when that was out of the way I decided to get my new (to me) bulkhead out of the shed.
Which if I'm honest was a monumental task. Had a bit of a sort out while every thing was out.
Thought about selling some stuff and then thought nah I'll keep it :eek: I just love hording stuff :D

Any way a few piccys of said bulkhead, Nice and solid. Few bits of surface rust where panels meet. But I'll clean it up and seam sealer it.

how "bad" is the old bulkhead mate?

Not as bad as yours ;)
Off hand I think it wants the foot well patching.
Top is solid
and top corners have been done before. Although not the best. But then again I've seen a lot worse and I like repairs to be invisible so I'm going to say that :)

Arron that bulk head looks ace. a good clean up , little wire brush work check and reseal seams. the get a drain hole in you pillars and then a rust proofing in the bulk head and should be good for a few years

Do you need a 1.4 transfer box? Mines off my r380 300tdi gearbox? I got a 1.2 disco one now so mines up for sale?

Yes I need a 1.4 although you're a little far from me.

Aaron this is looking 10x better than the last one.

Definitely a shame about your work situation but look at it this way....you've now got time to sort out the landy whilst you look for something more long term, something you enjoy. Price of units can be expensive, but if you look around there are some great deals out there! I certainly wouldn't hesitate to bring my defender to you having seen your work close up.

Looking forward to seeing this one in person next week mate....! :)

I agree mate people would come to you or better still look at doing mobile service , repairs
I would gladly pay you to fit a timing bet kit ect
has to be the way to go mate
