First issue.

New old stock crank. New old stock oversized pistons/ rings/ gudgeons/…….original con rods, all standard shells.

all fit perfectly but the pistons are sticking out the top of the block.

and I mean sticking out. Bout 6mm.

Any ideas:confused:

Welcome to LZ. Note it’s usually customary to introduce yourself before just steaming in with daft questions on the forum. Have you any pictures, we like pictures :D

I would check the stroke length cos the 2.25 & 2.5 have different stroke by about the amount mentioned. (so wiki says anyway)

He says same old rods (from old engine)?
Could be a wrong crank? Or pistons?

J

I’ll pop one out this afternoon and measure it against the old one.

thanks for the advice on the 2.5. I didn’t think anything of it as the new crank went in so well. Forgetting the LR means swap anything in Burmingeze.

From memory, there should be numbers stamped on one of the crank webs, might help identify that.

Welcome back Bob.

Been doing a bit of searching, and so far not come up with anything about Series crankshaft numbers, although there seems to be lots about Mini crankshaft numbers, for some reason.

So unless you can come up with anything better, I can only suggest calling one or both of the two Richards. Turner at Turners, or Hall at Glencoyne.

If they can't help, thinking it is a bit of a Richard the Third! :(:D

The stroke seems to be around 96.5mm or 3.8inch.
It sticks out of the top 4mm.

Then I guess you have a 2.5 crank.:(

From wiki.

Overview
Production
1986–1989
Layout
Configuration
Inline-4 cylinders
Displacement 2.5 L; 152.3 cu in (2,495 cc)
Cylinder bore 90.47 mm (3.562 in)
Piston stroke 97 mm (3.82 in)

Maybe Turners would do a swap??

J
Got to agree with that.

Just been looking at an original Series manual, 2286cc diesel engine. Actually a 3 bearing engine, but unless anyone knows different, I doubt if there is much difference in compression.

And there is no mention of piston protrusion, or how to measure it, in the manual.
Which leads me to believe that there is no piston protrusion on that engine.
Even if there was, it wouldn't be anything like 4mm.

I’ve contacted the supplier for returns.
Deffo a 2.5.

It’s back out now

old one popped in and pistons back to not protruding :)

Now onto sourcing a diesel ignition barrel for less than a kidney

Bit of a long shot, but if it is the same as a Td5 Defender one, we have got one you can have.
I doubt it. They stoped making the one I need many years ago. It has a housing cast into the main barrel that the pull to stop cable anchors to.
There was one on flea bay last week for £800 but it was a left hand drive one from titily.
