On country roads which is my usual haunt I'm getting between 15 and 18 out of my P38, depending how much I want to hear it snorting and growling at the Prius's. I did get 20 on a nice gentle run though so I know it can be a bit more frugal when the mood takes it but why would you have such a monstrously lovely engine as that and make it sip? Seeing as I'm only aiming at about 5000 miles a year tops I'm happy to make the most of it and hear it growl and snort when I do take it out.

I get about 30 out of my Disco 4 but I know that can do a lot more when I want it to, but once again, it's fun to see the stunned faces on the young lads when you leave their jacked up, quad exhaust Peugeot 206 standing at the lights. No one expects a car that size to take off like that. The 0-60 is supposed to be about 9 seconds which isn't bad for something of that bulk (and with my bulk sat inside it) but the 0-40 is enough to snap your head back and leap past lots of things, nipping away before they know what just happened.

I had a 4.2 XK8 before the Disco so fuel economy has never played a major role in my thinking. I was lucky to squeeze 23 out of that for all the same reasons above. Even my SAAB 9-3 was a gulper. I got into single figures in a month of city driving with that. The best quote I've heard though was from my little lad. We were snarling along in the RR and when I put my foot down to overtake he turned to me and said, "Can you hear that dad? That's the sound of a rain forest weeping", which had me in stitches. I'm tempted to have that put on a bumper sticker. Given my reasonably otherwise small carbon footprint, I'm happy to use my share up on my 7.6L of Landy hardware.

Hi Guys,
Just for the record... I recently drove my 1998 4.6HSE from JHB to DBN (in South Africa), a trip of about 600km, I had no ABS assistance for the breaks (pump had failed), so I was driving VERY slowly with an average speed of about 80Kph (50Mph). Well, I averaged 11.6 Liters per 100 km! That equates to about 24.5mpg!!!
Not too bad hey...? :clap2:
It just goes to shows it CAN be done, IF you want to....
The question is though, do you really want to...???

NO!!!

LOL.

Hi all

I get around 24 to 26mpg on a run at about 50 to 60mph. Nearer 24 at 70mph. Around town, I dont know because I am too frightened to look!

Big factors are:

Spark plugs - I was doing 18 to 20mpg on a run. Changed the spark pugs and it went straight to and consistenlt 22mpg.

Lambda Sensors - Had an unrelated fault and ended up changing both Lambda sensors and now I get 24 to 26mpg easilly. On the odd occaision it hits 28!!!

Hope that helps
