300 Tdi Rebuild

Done everything I have wanted it to do......if I was designing and building a nuclear reactor I might want something a bit more 'exepnsive' but for automotive use where the tolerences are quite broad it has served its purpose well.
Champion. Not set it up yet, but the dial seems good. ie doesn't feel light, seems well made
 
I have the same magbase and dti.....

They are good for the price, I had a cheap set , but I left them in Mexico. But being pedantic it is not what I would call a DTI. It is a Dial indicator.............:D:D...but just me being picky , same with digital calipers and vernier calipers.

Just make sure it has a smooth movement and is not sticky.
 
Keep it clean and dry and wipe the spindle with a bit of wd40 now and again and I bet it will do everything you need to.

I was surprised at how well it cleaned up. That's about an hour and a half with various wire wheels on the drill. Bought a big wheel to fit the angle grinder yesterday, but put a bolt through it and using it on the drill. Also bought some cheap Silverline ones in a set of different sizes and they have been great to get in to the small cast sections and different radii. Bit more work needed on it tomorrow. The break cleaner should reveal areas that need more doing too.
Do you think I should paint the head? I'll go and look to see what Aaron Morris does :)
 
Have you decided on a colour for the block?
At the end of this, you could do a great write up of what you needed to do the job. ......please.

I would not paint the head, heads get prety hot and would scorch most paints, even the engine enamels.
Block should look good in the red and like you mentioned before you can see any leak or dribble, and also you can wipe it clean easily.
 
I was thinking more of a list of tools / other stuff , like lubes etc..

I could do a list as I have nearly all of it on a spreadsheet :oops: Though some tools I've still to add. I've spent a lot of money, but at the end of the day I'll have an engine rebuild inc new OEM pistons, rings, main and big end bearings and valves, new clutch kit, new timing belt and kit, new oil pump, refurbed OEM injectors, all new gaskets and seals, cleaned and or painted engine.

Why not, McLaren are currently using a similar output in the latest F1 car.....

I am a massive McLaren fan, have been since I was a 6-7 year old....and have followed them through the good times and the bad...but this Honda engine is joke.....they could do a lot worse then put a 300Tdi in it at the moment!!!
 
I haven't got anything much to add, but I'm following this with interest. The innards of the engine don't look to bad to me. In my youth we used to try to keep things like Triumph Heralds, Morris Oxfords and Vauxhall Vivas going with engines retrieved from scrap yards and things looked a whole lot worse usually. Bearing shells down to the copper, scores on the bearing surfaces, bits of disintegrated piston ring stuck to the inside of the cylinder bores and wearing grooves in the piston, that sort of thing. So yours looks pretty good by comparison. When it goes back together with new components it should be good for another 100,000 miles or so and you'll be able to drive around enjoying all that fresh new 300tdi goodness.

Just fitting the springs on to the new valves. Opened the Elring top gasket set to get the new valve stem seals out and there are two thin plastic tubes in there. Any idea what they are for or where they go?
