Yeah, I think my wire wheels on the mains drill aren't man enough. One of those twisted cup brushes on a grinder look the mutts.

For use on the crank, for your belt cover you could start with a chisel
Ha, ha, crossed wires there. Thought you were talking about the timing belt cover. The crust on there is rock hard.

Just been thinking....you have some Assembly Lube don't you?
Something like Lucas Assembly Lube or similar engine rebuild lube?
It is a thick sticky lube used for breaking in new assemblies - it is coated on all metal to metal contacts to provide lubrication in the initial start/engine turn over phase to prevent damage while the oil pressure builds and fills the oil galleries and gets to all the important bits and bobs.....

Not yet, mate. But it's on this mornings shopping list. I'm just off to get another core plug (I bought 5 and there are 6), spigot bush, RTV sealant, assembly lube and a hand spray for the brake cleaner. Appreciate you thinking on though - awesome! I read about it on another thread where someone said they were having problems getting their pistons in. A response (might have been you) said "you have smothered everything in assembly lube"? I made a note of it then

Yeah, cheers Bennehboy. Ordered one as well as a pair of piston ring expansion pliers, they should arrive today. Pistons have come with rings already on, so won't be needing the ring expanders
. Thanks for the tip though, great shout.I've been al over this morning trying to find engine lube, LR specialist, TMS, two tractor engineering places. No joy. TMS could get it for Monday, but tried elsewhere hoping to get it today. Looks like I'm waiting until Tuesday at earliest to start putting it together.
On the plus side, injectors and clutch kit have arrived while I was out.

That's a pity I had a look in the garage and unfortunately I don't have any. Things get so much more positive when you see it coming together, hope you get the time to give us some pictures, looking forward to seeing the nice shiny painted block ready for build up.

I've phoned TMS and they are going to look some assembly lube up and call me back shortly. They reckon they can get it for Tuesday. Piston clamp hasn't turned up yet anyway and the bank holiday is putting the muckers on deliveries
Lots of cleaning to do still. Just bought some heavy duty wire wheels for the timing belt cover etc, core plugs to replace and painting to do. I'll defo post some pictures

you need to fit each ring in turn in the bore its going to live in to check the gap and file the ends if necessary, then refit to piston the right way up some rings have top written on them to help others any markings or letters go to the topYeah, cheers Bennehboy. Ha, ha! Here's me thinking it would be as straight forward as lube up, clamp and gently tap in. Might have known
TMS have called back and can't get engine assembly lube anymore
Earliest delivery I can find on ebay is next Friday! It's Amazon prime next

Cheers, Bennehboy. I've managed to find a motor factors in Newcastle that can get me some. He doesn't normally keep it, but just rebuilt a cylinder head and got some himself. Lucas stuff and he said it was great to use. £6.99 for 110ml. I've ordered 2 and can get them Saturday.

you allways need to gap the rings even if they turn out ok but it is very common to file a few or all.i just use oil, its more important to turn the engine over by hand to prime the oil ways etc before starting which fits in nicely with setting the tappetsHa, ha! The ring expansion tool will come in handy then.
I did contemplate just using lashings of oil, but tracked some down and ordered it now. One less thing to have nagging in the back of your mind. A symptom of doing it for the first time, for me anyway!

Been visiting family today so not a lot of time available. Replaced the core plugs. Old ones weren't too bad, barely corroded at all.
Then started with the wire wheels on the block.

It's come up pretty shiny. There was very light rain and the forecast here tomorrow is better, so I'll give it another going over in the morning, degrease it and paint it then.
Yesterday more tools arrived.
