Right,

Before ye say a word, i know im essentially driving a tractor, not a ferrari. :D

But it came with a full length IC so im going to make use of it, starting with the boost bompensator. ive started by turning in the 27 torx screw on the top of the boost compensator diaphragm 1.5 turns.

Now, in the guide im using, it says to turn up to this level and the if theyres excess black smoke, wind it back out until its an acceptable level.

I wound it in in three stages of half turns and theres been no smoke at all. Now, i know that black smoke is unburnt diesel and its pointless to be blowing it out the exhaust, but what i want to achieve is the max amount of low down power without the undesirable black smoke.

so my question is, can i screw it in more till i see black smoke then back it off a bit or is 1.5 turns the limit?

thoughts, questions, comments? :D

Yes you can, the 1.5 turns specified by your guide is just what that person who wrote it found was the max before it smoked for him.
To be honest since you still haven't got any smoke at this point you might as well just try delving deeper into the pump/ compensator, because this probably means your car is under fueling a little.
The best thing if you want low end power is to start with rotating the compensator spring tensioner/ star wheel to give less tension, as this will bring the fuel in at lower revs.
But it's personal preference, over where you start, leave and how far you go with fueling really.

thanks for that, ill give it a go winding it in another bit so, i intend on adjusting the star wheel eventually and bringing the turbo up to 1.0 bar, but i want to get an EGT sensor first so i can keep an eye on it.

go into the 300tdi engine section, there is a very good pdf on a thread in there, explains exactly what does what and how to adjust.
IIRC the smoke screw is the last thing to set. ive done all three, and it makes a huge difference. (mines a 300, but same difference on the pump tune)
Ive got mine set so it gives a small puff of smoke when you really boot it (till the turbo catches up)

thats the one im using lad thanks :) it is very very good but just wanted to be certain before i went any further. as for the order in which you do the tweaks, if you are doing all three you have to start from the inside out, but ill reset the screw when i get to that stage. do you use a Exhaust temp gauge? if so, do the gasses get that hot or is it overkill getting one?

From what I read, you only need to worry about EGT if you run at full throttle for long lengths of time, seeing as I very rarely do that, even when towing, I havn't bothered, neither has anyone else I know.
If your upping the boost, Id think harder about getting one, along with a boost guage. id adjust the pump first, and see how you feel, it makes a huge difference, you might decide not to bother with the boost.
If you do, you will need to up it again anyway, more air needs more fuel.
