200TDI oil cooler pipe conundrum

Hi all
I know this subject has been touched on in the past but I can't find an answer to this particular predicament.

I have a 1991 200TDI Defender. I bought a new rad. When purchasing I queried the suitability of the rad and was told new one is direct replacement (you already know where this is going don't you?).

Naturally enough the oil cooler fittings on the rad are not compatible with the oil hoses from the engine.

Rad has what I think are 'O' ring fittings, hoses have a 'cone' type compression fitting.

Both seem to be 20mm metric. At least the hoses do attach to the rad - but don't seal.

Where can I get a couple of adapters, 20mm metric both ends, Rad end female to take 'O' ring. Hose end 20mm male to accept 'cone' fitting on hoses to/from engine? Or is there another way without spending a fortune?
Thanks in advance
Paul

We have had this recently and am sure @Hicap phill may remember.
He had the fittings I think. I am not a diesel guy so its memory and that maybe a bit skectchy;).

He will be along after hes had his Friday fish & chip supper:).

I gave my last lot of fittings to @dag019

but this is the part number @Paul in Sussex
Think they are normally £40 each

New rad is welded ally, not plastic end caps type.
The e Islington rad is ten year old Britpart and falling apart. So I bought an ally one as an upgrade...
I have spent the evening scouring the Internet to no avail.
I think I will get some 20mm male and female fittings and try to machine something up - maybe.

What phil was trying to say was the bits your pipes attach to on the old rad should screw out so you can use them.

Did you read the thread I linked too? can you see your pipe end in the pics?

NTC3858 but that looks like a taper thread into the rad.
But as NRC8618 is the same pipe end but a double its a straight thread so would need a seal at the rad. Might work in your case if the rad is straight thread

I have no idea of the thread size though. If not a good hydraulics place would probably be able to help with a fitting, probably cheaper than LR too;).

Some pics of what you have may help too, copy paste or drag n drop as the site is having a hissy fit with the "upload" fucntion.

Hi all
The old fittings may well screw out but they won't fit the new rad as it is welded ally. Fittings on new rad are 'O' ring type, presumably for a later vehicle?

Existing oil pipes are 'cone' type compression fittings. The thread seems to be the same, which is 20mm metric.

I took rad to my local hydraulic place (which is how I found the thread size) but they couldn't help, however he did have some 20mm metric female fittings. I might buy male + female and see if I can make something up. I have a lathe etc but not at all familiar with fabricating one-off hydraulic fittings.

Does anyone know for sure what the thread is on the old pipes? They screwed onto new rad OK but it seems odd to have metric hydraulics on such an old vehicle? But I'm not an expert...

As far as I know, all fittings on Tdi Defenders were metric.

Have you talked to the supplier of the radiator about this? Parts should really fit the vehicle they are supplied for, although they don't always.

Using adaptors, as you seem to be heading towards, could be the easiest way to go.

Yes I spoke to the suppliers.
I had provided model make / year + chassis number and sought assurances the rad would fit. They said it would - it doesn't. I can send it back which leaves me with a nasty Britpart radiator which has actually corroded in two...

Looking online many suppliers state that their ally rad won't fit 'taper fittings' - my supplier didn't which is why I purchased that particular rad. My suspicion is that a ship load of ally rads have come out of China with incorrect fittings. People are selling them willy nilly in the hope that some customers at least manage to sort something out.

Just another dismal story in the saga of Chinese rubbish sold as something proper. I recently bought rod ends from Craddocks, supposedly OEM - they came in a plain unmarked brown box, no maker name cast into the pieces. Ditto with an 'OEM' UJ, actually made in India, no markings on part, nasty quality. I could go on...

Could be the rad would fit a later model Defender, or maybe not. As you say, parts ordering for old vehicles can be a bit of a minefield

There are lots of ways you can go. One would be to attach new fittings to the ends of the old pipes.

Another would be to try and find out what the rad would accept, and get a set of pipes for that, assuming the other ends of the pipes are the same.

Yet another option would be to send the Ali rad back, and get another Britpart one, which should fit, but may only last another ten years,

You are right in what you say. I have owned this thing for about twelve years or so. Recently fitted a new chassis. Wherever possible I try not to degrade the vehicle by fitting rubbish.
Part of the reason for fitting a new rad, apart from the fact the Britpart one has rotted away, is that I expect to be doing some towing. I will also be re-fitting the stock springs in place of RR EFI fronts all round which make for lots of articulation and a good ride but not so good for towing...
