thread reserrection time:confused:

how quick a year passes:eek:

U5IXAZX.jpg

dug up the 'L' reg Disco today, it's not moved for a while & with a charged battery it started on the second compression! I love the 200tdi engine:cool:

tV5v7LE.jpg

obviously not taking a Team photo would have been rude:p

unfortuntely I might be using the 'L' reg as panel & trim donor for 'MUT' and engine donor for the 2.5d Ninety:oops:

Rich.

the Ninety never had great brake pedal feel so I bought a new Master-cylinder & flexi-hoses when we first had it (2 years ago), naturally I've not had the time & interest to fit them yet:oops:

8SU6FJy.jpg

the origonal (if origonal on a REME jigsaw?) front calipers are in a bit of a state, passed mot twice with us but look like they'd be due for retirement.....

anyway, I'd been thinking of a pair of new / reconditioned calipers and noticed Bigred selling the correct type on ebay as 'shop-soiled' for £23 & £29 each (why the price difference between sides I have no idea:rolleyes:) so with a small discount @ £50.97 the pair posted:cool:

maybe I'll have time to fit these calipers / flexi's & m/cylinder this weekend for a bit of an improvement:)

might fit the new rear & pre-loved front Bilstein B6 dampers also but the Armstrong's currently in use work well...

Rich.

actually done a thing (or two:p

new front calipers / pads / stainless braided flexi's and master cylinder (genuine LR) going on:cool:

BMPyKzC.jpg

both fronts done:cool:

ThCFZve.jpg

Y2qG03c.jpg

naturally both sides needed new metal brakepipes making so time wasted diggin for tooling & fittings:rolleyes:

NITgwyh.jpg

drivers caliper looks a state, definately time to replace:eek:

hheQNfc.jpg

something looked suspect...

dVkPgdF.jpg

OOPS:oops:

sNN6bpu.jpg

the previous owner fitted polybushes to the radius arms (~6 years ago?) and theyre degrading so will search for some genuine LR rubber bushes:)

LKMZueq.jpg

the Powerhouse:D 2.5 Litres of noise (but little go:confused:) - time for the long awaited 200tdi ;)

as an update, posted late but followed-on from the above....

Went for a testdrive to assess & bed the new pads.....

q747SfK.jpg

engine shat the fanbelt:rolleyes:

but, the brakes work:D:D:D

this engine has eaten a few fanbelts since we've had it, pulleys look aligned and evrything runs freely:confused:

no problem as theres a different motor going in:cool:

Rich.

Not that your too bothered as new engine going in but have you checked the water pump for possible cause of throwing the belt

got the job of two front callipers on my disco 1 next week :/

have you checked the water pump for possible cause of throwing the belt

have looked for causes, worn bearings and miss-alignment and all seems good:rolleyes:

got the job of two front callipers on my disco 1 next week

I've had a new pair to go on one of my Disco's for years, guaranteed to need hard-pipes making but otherwise an easy job:cool: - might be worth getting new caliper to hub bolts while you're at it;)

Rich.

Massey I no but a certain build date used to chuck belts due to a partial seize In the water pump change the pump never happens again

nothing serious to report, driven the Ninety a few times...

ZlhPpWX.png

bought one of those posh 'Slickshift' quickshift thinggies

https://www.onlinegearboxparts.com/product/defender-lt77-r380-slickshift-inc-td5-bundle

I must confess that if my mrs could reach first / reverse then the standard setup would have stayed:oops:

but...

she requested it;)

now it's done theres some re-learning to do - mostly the position of gears and not reaching for the wipermotor when selecting reverse (Lt77 box)

Mh8tI09.jpg

the expensive kit:confused:

OSQYMXX.jpg

longer pivot-distance on new shifter.

D6lokSL.jpg

the 'spacer' fitted, I used Locktite 'Flange Sealer' to stop leaks.

9YpVolq.jpg

assembled.

criticism time, this kit was not cheap but for the sake of a few pennies Syncrogearboxes could have thrown in an M10 nyloc nut / washer to attach the gearstick:rolleyes:

collected a 200tdi Defender engine today.
fits in the Ninety easily (but in the wrong end:()

LuN5t6l.jpg

very complete with wiring & fuel pipework...

hZx81l6.jpg

even has the (fiberglass??) turbo heatshield:confused: something I don't think I've ever seen before!

will give it a degrease & jetwash tomorrow then assess any repairs / inspect the clutch etc.

have more bits to fit the Ninety, I already had new rear dampers so bought fronts, turrets and steering-damper to complete the set. also some 200tdi parts like cambelt kit / waterpump / hoses and throttle cable as prep for the tdi conversion:cool:

subject of the tdi...

oEO3eH6.jpg

setup for test running...

AfheZV2.jpg

uY4a7TF.jpg

started easily & idled so ready for prep-work & servicing.

more un-progress....

found a seller on Ebay that listed genuie LR gearknobs, bought one on 30th December....
heard nothing so I messaged them a few days ago to be told that LR had no stock & no date of availability:mad: why did the seller (landroversparesuk -
Duckworth Jaguar Land Rover) take an order & list a number of these available if there was no stock?

anyway...

RNUZeab.jpg

arrived today so maybe they actually ordered it AFTER my message:rolleyes:

and yes, it is for the R380 whereas I have LT77 gearbox (different reverse gear position) but I wanted a genuine 'knob......

RHYxLyX.jpg

bought a D1 pas steering-box.

gEogewR.jpg

4-bolt fit same as the Ninety but has the pitman-arm that uses a trackrod-end as opposed to the Ninety's arm with the built-in balljoint - do I swap them over (are pitman-arms interchangable??) or tun with a Disco type track-rod & make a mount for the Ninety's steering-damper:confused:

Matching jack & axles stands how posh :D

couldn't find Defender 200tdi intercooler pipes so bought new from JLR Heratage (or whoever:confused:)

fLBp0NC.jpg

top intercooler metal pipe & fuel return pipe from 200tdi type filter to fuel tank, the engine I have is from a lwb and we have a Ninety - so the fuel pipe is a touch long:rolleyes:

it's only money:(

Rich.

the Ninety has no glowplug relay & relies on a 'half' position on the ignition switch, I'm liking poshness so wanted a timed glowplug circuit and remembered something from the murky past about a D1 200tdi glowplug relay & underbonnet loom someware in the garage:confused:

mH9xDzK.jpg

took a few days thinking & diggin but found the bastard:cool:

now to decipher the loom diagrams for the 4 smaller wires (6 pin relay) then decide on where it'll live underbonnet etc.

more faffin to follow.

Rich.

been thinking of an electronic speedo conversion for the Ninety, it' 'origonal' speedo is in km (as an ex-Army Landy) and interesting when accuracy is concerned:confused:

theres a few manufacturers of programmable electronic speedometers like Stack & VDO and also unbranded on ebay etc.

subject of ebay, looked @ VDO as they're similar to the origonal 80's LR items and there was one advertised as a tachometer (but photos of a speedo) for sensible money so some bidding followed:cool:
delivered today and it's a speedo so happy-days:D

pjxDK4F.jpg

the millage may be resetable, will have a read of the distructionso_O

1JW56nT.jpg

came mounted in a dashtop 'pod' and pre-wired, live / earth & signal with the live & earth bridged to the illumination, I'll probably keep this as such (K.I.S.S.)

pZ7cPFN.jpg

p/number etc. the mount-rings are available seperately and Merlin Motorsport have stock https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/spare-mounting-ring-for-80mm-vdo-gauges-800005005

this speedo is programmable and accepts various pulse inputs (& 12 or 24v power)
distrctions are online
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/files/transfer/technical/doc/vdo_speedo_instructions.pdf

I'm thinking of fitting a 'hall-effect' sensor in place of the old speedo-cable on the transfer box to generate the vsso_O

ALSO...

I think this speedo supports a vss output so options for fitting cruise-control:cool:

more on the joblist:confused:

Rich.

windeee today and a few trees in our garden looked sorta wobbly so out with the bowsaw...

fkUtYIe.jpg

one tree was a little loose in the ground and getting moved by the wind so secured with a strap & sling to the Ninety while I got brave with a ladder...

5vrRTS5.jpg

I'd already 'topped' (well, sorta) one tree, reversed the Ninety up to it & stood on it's roof to attack with the saw:D and this was the second victim.

hRfgZM8.jpg

the aftermath:confused:

loads of wood that I don't have a suitable fire to use in:(

maybe I'll get around to tidying the swamp garden this summero_O

Rich.

re. the 200tdi engine conversion...

I've been looking for some oem type pipework to connect the intercooler and it seems that genuine def 200tdi parts are a premiumo_O

couldn't find Defender 200tdi intercooler pipes so bought new from JLR Heratage (or whoever:confused:)

Rich.

I'd found (& bought) the top pipe but looks like I'm making the lower one:(

on the plus side, I've found a nos airfilter - turbo hose so hopefully that'll fit / work & last a few years as I wasn't convinced on aftermarket quality:oops:

Rich.
