hi i have just brought a 2000 vogue with the harmon kardon system ,

what i am trying to do is install a parrot bluetooth kit what i need to know is that is there a telephone mute wire on the back of the stereo as i have read a bit today and the results tell me that there is an amplifirer so was going to connect it directly to the front speakers and use the mute wire from the parrot kit but am unsure if and what color the mute wire is on the head unit and why has the parrot kit have 3 mute wires if anyone on here can help i would be more that greatfull thanks and looks like a great forum.

i did do a search for ages but could only find a answer for a 2004 which states black but just trying to make sure as its a 2000 and dont want to blow it all up thanks though for the quick reply

Ok folks, I keep getting the same question over and over again and is starting to get frustrating. So I have decided to give a brief run through on what to do. this information can be applied to other vehicles with non ISO stereo's as well. My methods may differ slightly from other engineers in the equipment that I use, some engineers frown on using a test lamp and use a meter. I have been doing it this way for over 10 years on vehicles I have never set eyes on before and have never damaged a vehicle stereo to date!

The common questions I get asked is where is the mute on this car and where is it on that one. To be quite honest, I don't know them all, but always (usually) find them if the car has one by following the basic proceedures I will outline further on.

This section is for guidance only! I will not be held liable for damage caused to your stereo by following any of the instructions that follow! Any auto electrical work should always be left to a competent person who knows what they are doing!

Knowledge

If you do not understand what a 12 volt positive feed is, or a 12 volt switched live or an earth is, then you do not have the required knowledge to do this yourself! If in doubt, pay a professional to do it for you!

You will require

Wire strippers
small cable ties
radio removal keys
Radio code (where applicable)

1 x 12 volt automotive test lamp. i use a snap on 12 volt one which is about £30.00, you can get a semi decent one from most good car accessory shops for about £10.00

Alternatively, you can use a 12v bulb holder with two wires on it and a low wattage bulb (5 watts or less or there will be too much resistance for it to work!), put a crocodile clip on one end and bare back the wire and solder (tin) the end.

ISO PLUGs

By far the most common plug in French, German, Italian cars and aftermarket accessory radios.
The picture below shows ISO plugs with common mute posistions and common earth and 12v live posistions for 99% of ISO radios (excl kenwood, they usually have a blanking plug and Sony have an ATT wire).

ISO_Tel_Mutes.jpg

Image above is viewed from the radio side of the plug, in other words, if you unplug the ISO's from the radio, this is what you will see. The top plug with nothing written on is for the front and rear speakers.

Checking for a mute

Pop the radio out

check for a pinout label on the top, some tell you the tel mute posistion

if no label then switch radio on

connect one end of testlamp to earth/ground/radio chassis

probe the posistions above, if the sound dims or cuts out check the display and see if it says phone/tel/mute/ATT if so you have found the mute

insert the mute wire in that posistion and secure with a cable tie.

Heres me doing exactly what i have described in a Citroen C5 and I found the mute in about 35 seconds tops! N.B. do not use the fuse method on this vehicle to test for mute, arcing will blow the ECU!!!

thanks so much mate i take it that the bulb will stop any arcing if u connect to the wrong one ie a live or switched live ect and light the bulb up instead i have a bit of knollage in electrical as i am a electrician by trade so know a bit but not done a lot on cars so if i find the mute wire and splice into the front speakers directly from the car kit this would work thanks again mate i really appriciate it sorry for the spelling .

sorry what i mean is when i find the mute wire connect the mute wire from the car kit to the mute wire on the stereo, then basically disconnect the front speaker wires and connect to the input of the car kit then connect the speakers to the output of the car kit so loops through the car kit, thanks so much for all the replys i have put one in my van before but had standard iso connectors so had to make no mods but with this i think i need the mute wire as it has amp and sub as standard so it needs mutting from the head unit

Save yourself the hassle of titting about with cables and trying to find mute leads and stuff, get the mute cable that Soundlinx does.

See Range Rover Mute Lead: dashmount

This will mute the radio when you get a call, route it through the speakers and make sure your car kit is turned off when you switch off the ignition.

I use the equivalent one for my Nokia CK-7W on my Clarion HK system in my P38. Plugged straight in, no fuss, no bother, really is the way to go. You don't want to damage any of the DSP amps etc in the HK system and this lead will take all that worry away.

thanks for that but if i connect it like i said above am i right in saying all will be good as the mute lead from the parrot car kit will mute the stereo and the speakers will connect in and out of the car kit as usuall saves 100 odd thats all.thanks for the replys every one first range rover i have had and could never go back to a ford and that again after driving it now, must be easyer than stripping the v8 heads off to do the gaskets which i have just done my self.

Im not familiar with the car kit from Parrot but I would definitely advise you to spend the extra ££ (checking with Dashmount that the harness will work ok with your kit) than start trying to cut around the audio harness in the vehicle.

The way you mentioned above seems very tedious to wire up as well, disconnecting wires from the front speakers, running them back into the vehicle, behind the dash, through the car kit and then running a new set of wires back out of the car kit, through the grommet thingamajigs in the doors and back to the speakers, seems like allot of effort to goto.

You also have to remember that there are 3 sets of speakers in the front doors, to which are you planning to connect up to??

I dont want to sound rude but im going to say this anyway, if you are worrying about spending £100 on a car phone mute lead then P38 ownership could be an 'interesting' experience for you :D:D £100 is nothing in the world of Range Rovers! Don't get me wrong, im all for saving money where possible but on this ocassion I think you will find it's better to go wit the pre-built harness, if your idea goes wrong in any way then you will be looking at way more than £100 to get it fixed. That mute lead is as expensive as it is because of the ammount of time and engineering that went into it (I assume, could just be overpriced but it does work perfectly first time everytime).

Good luck with whatever you do, just let us all know the outcome :)

its not the money really i just impatient i surpose for once in my life i am going to listen to someone and buy that kit after all the kit u mentioned is only a tank of petrol i surpose thanks agian for all the help.

I would go along with Wills 100%. The P38 will have your hand in your pocket frequently.
I am currently in the process of motivating myself to fit a Nokia CK7-W kit into the Wife's Vectra and have bought a tailor made automute lead from Siocommunications (They have a website) which is Plug & Play. Google Autoleads and Sio, there is a fair bit of info. available and they also do Parrott wiring kits. Another site is Sextons. Maybe Halfrauds may have a lead.

i was even thinking of not even bothering touching the harmon system just finding the mute wire and adding a seperate speaker instead of touching the speaker system but will go for the tailer made kit i think thanks everyone for all your help im sure i will be on here for a while as from what i have heard these v8 engines can be very trouble some fingers crossed its not the case

I fitted a Nokia CK7-W to my P38 a few years ago and wired it into the harness/radio and found the mute connection from this site, the pinout in the plug did not have a pin fitted and I had to use a crimp to make the connection. I used the separate speaker supplied with the handsfree kit. In hindsight, I would have used an automute adaptor lead and used the car speakers instead, as I intend doing with the Vectra.

irishrover u were absalutly right mate ,there was no wire i had to add it after i found it like i was told by mad hat man the test bulb form halfords only cost 1.99 as well ,i found it on the grey plug and was the end pin there was 3 missing pins but only one was at the end if anyone else wants to know where it is in mad hat mans picture drawing was the top right hand pin and i then disconnected one of the front speakers each side run a cable back to the parrot kit then one back again so i had to add two extra speaker wires to each door which to be honest was the easiest thing i have ever done even got them down the rubber tubing from door to body work so look as if its never been touched and works spot on well pleased so thanks to everyone that has replyd to my thread i hope i will be able to return the favor some time.:) :) :) :) :crazy_driver:

Hi,

I do have a Parrot MKI9000 and a additionnal speaker. I think it's not loud enough, especially on highway with roofrack and mud tyres.

I'd like to use factory speakers.

May you told me the name of the Dashmount lead?

Best Regards

Florent

Flo,

The lead you want is from Soundlinx and the model number is RAN01NOK if you have the Clarion head unit and RAN02NOK if you have the Alpine head unit.

Dashmount don't seem to sell these anymore so you will need to have a search online.

These leads properly mute the stereo and play the car kit audio through the speakers. I have it in my P38 and it works brilliantly.
