2.25 petrol any good

Been looking at getting a series for weekend and winter fun and came across what looks to be a decent (cheap ;) ) s2a that ticks most boxes but it comes with the 2.25 petrol lump.

What are these engines like? not expecting speed or economy but something that will start on a morning and can pull me/others out of a ditch would help.

Had considered a 2/300tdi conversion but tbh in reality i would struggle to find the time & space to do it.
 
no top end grunt put will pull anything if gears are used ,lovely engine much more driveable than contemporary diesels ,not very economical
 
2.25 petrols are slightly quieter than the diesel, and go faster
but worse mpg (pretty obvious really)

both engines are bomproof but lack in power compared to the 200/300 tdi
also spares are readily available for the engine so getting spares is easy

If you can tune it yourself by ear, you will finish up with a good engine which, on an 88 can give you a return of around 25-28mpg! Forget about keeping to the factory settings, they don't work well on an old clogger, but are good for the initial setup which will only give you 18-22mpg.

My '64 2A cruised at 75+ on the motorway at a return of 32mpg! Got even better returns out of the Series 1 (If anyone remembers the Keep LandRover British campaign in the early 80's.)

just replaced my 2.25 petrol engine, with a 200 di, the only reason was the economy, the 2.25 engines are great, quiet, smooth, pull reasonably well, and go forever, i got about 20 to22mpg maximum out of my 88, it had a webber carb, overdrive, electric fan, freewheeling hubs, and the engine was fully rebuilt,

cant see 28mpg, and 32mpg at 75mph:confused:, can only just get that out of my 300tdi disco and my 200tdi defender, my series wont even do 75mph, i would like to know what you have done to get that mpg?? please tell

(I've never seen a landy 'cruise' - at 60mph my series 2a scares the crap out of me and everyone on the road around me as it sways around and is clearly out of control and unable to stop!)
 
firstly cus i'm very happy at 50mph which its fine at and the transmission is happy (200tdi, don't want to trash the g/b) and secondly - i intend to - i have a very long list of jobs to do, none critical, all would improve it. As time passes i slowly do them :) Its only an off-road toy though, so, although road legal to drive to off-road sites or to do green lanes, its not used every day or anything
 
75MPH is possible, there is no doubt about that - but no chance up in even the slightest of gradients! I wouldnt sit at 75 either, it would be caining it! And 35 MPG at 75MPG? Hmm!
 
at 75 in an old series IS possible, but youd need a tailwind, a downhill, and a **** load of balls, in my dads old 2a anything above 55 sounded like the engine would explode- series wern't built for speed or good mpg.
i'm calling b/s about 32 mpg at 75
 
not geared for speed ,but with 3.5 diffs 2.25 petrol will do 80 quite easily and safely with good wheel brgs swivel pins relay,steering.box,ball joints etc those that cant need fixing
 
good lump ..good for off roading and fun pulls well in low box and tends not to try and spin the wheels / break half shafts ....but it is slow noisey and very very thirsty .....a plodder of a engine shame the fuel econ spoils it ....75 is possible but i wouldnt like to try it .......
 
mine will only do about 65 absolutely flat out, sounds like it's gonna go bang at that as well. It's bad enough at 50, but does manage 27mpg on a long run.

it's fairly quiet, at least the engine isn't the biggest noise @50, mine runs really nicely, and I wouldn't change it for a 200 'cos it wouldn't make it any better at what it does, which is pootle about roads and greenlanes in a relaxed and slow fashion. Not for speed, if you want to get somewhere fast or cheaply then don't bother, but nothing beats it for pootling along with yer arm out the window vaguely steering and waving at people :)
 
75 mph??? at full throttle....
it must be 35 gpm
you need heavy duty balls, silicon sealant to ears and arse:)
 
As has been covered above:
Surprisingly quiet engines, reliable, good parts availability, and will get you 20mpg or thereabouts in real world driving (pootling along, enoying the view).


Don't expect to keep up with motorway speeds. 80mph may be possible with an overdrive and tuning, but controlling an emergency stop from that speed will scare the life out of you.
 
thanks for the replies, not too bothered about economy as it will be mainly a weekend and winter car would look for a doozil repmobile for 90% of my driving (work/family etc.)

Had spoken to someone about the 2.25 doozil lump but heard it can really struggle to pull its own weight so just wanted to check if the petrol engine was any better.

If the plan is to off road & green lane it im guessing it will need some water proofing similar to the fender/disco v8s.

Having had both diesel and petrol series vehicles I can honestly say the difference in mpg is negligible to the point of not noticing it at all.
As said in this post and others they are that little bit quicker of the mark and are definitely allot quieter I can onestly say they are the nicer of the two engines and slightly cheeper to repaire (No distributor pump, injectors ETC)
