I am looking to buy a code scanner that will cover the early Range Rover p38 1998 specifically, on some web sites they claim the icarsoft i930 will do the job, this scanner will not work on early vehicles it’s cover starts from 1999, another scanner the icarsoft NT510 will cover some codes but is very limited . Can anyone suggest a better unit for the job

If you have a petrol engine an OBDII reader like icarsoft or any cheap reader will do some diag on engine only. If you own a diesel they will do nothing at all. Nanocom is best diag for the P38 by a country mile.
 
+1 on nanocom. Not cheap, but for what it does, very good value for money. Also, small enough to carry around in the glove box which is a bonus.
 
i have also brought the icarsoft I930 but it does not work with the P38 1998 models only works with 1999 and on wards
can recommend another OBD scanner that will work on the 1998 M2 P38 plz

the icarsoft NT510 does not come up on icarsoft website

The P38 Diesel uses a proprietary interface protocol and as such only Land Rover biased diagnostics will work.

Nanocom, Faultmate, Bearmach Hawkeye, Lynx (I think), Testbook, and Bosch proprietary to name a few.

Generic OBD scanners will not work.
 
Get a nanocom, not cheap but not that expensive either just dont leave it on bonnet slam panel under one of the lock pins.......

One upside to the Hawkeye Total is it's unlocked to all models so it's got some futureproofing if you're likely to stay with LR vehicles. It does need extra leads and dongles buying for various models, others are the same but I think there's more with Hawkeye.

I couldn't recommend Lynx. Not sure it does everything claimed and support is terrible. Haven't tried Nanocom as yet.

Just to keep you in the loop, received today the icarsoft LR 2, the latest model which I was assured by the supplier to be able to read my air suspension and any error codes for the same on my P38 2000 plate diesel.........WRONG........ oh it can on the L322 model 2002 onwards along with steering angle, dpf, oil reset etc etc but not mine so buyer beware, this one is going back, not cheap but gives me no more information than a £20 job, so it looks like it is back to saving for a Nanocom unless someone is selling theirs for a 2.5lt diesel EDC engine.
 
You would think Blackbox would make their Nanocoms much cheaper . It would make sense because a lot more of us Landy boys would buy one even if it is only dedicated to a specific model

OK....You put in the developement, time, sacrafice, commitment, tooling, software, prototypes, etc etc etc and then start producing them cheaper.

Yes they can be costly, but also, you have to appreciate that Colin and the chaps and chappettes at BBS all have put a lot of blood sweat and tears into a tool that is 20 times cheaper and yet as capable as the dealers own Testbook!

It narks me that the nano is fair chunk of wonga and.... You have to pay more on top to unlock it for another bus!!!!
Come on blackbox, give a little....:(
