1997 300 tdi accelerator stops working intermittently

I’ve had an intermittent problem for about 6 months, it’s getting more frequent but I can’t diagnose the problem, any help much appreciated.

Engine runs fine then all of a sudden starts to lose power as driving. The accelerator stops working (pump it and there’s no rev or reaction at all), and the landy coasts to a stop. When it stops the engine stalls when not in gear.

Any suggestions?

Have you changed fuel filter, checked lift pump, if filter was dirty there could be gunge in the tank blocking the pick up tube
 
Change the filter would be first course of action, fuel lift pump.
Can you replicate the problem stationary?
A poor connection on the cut off solenoid would probably just stop the engine I would have thought.
Check air intake pipe for blockages while you are at it.
Hopefully it's something cheap rather than the injection pump.
