hi all i have just bought a 1996 range rover 2.5dse auto and have found a few problems with it,
1. sometimes it wont go into reverse the light is on the console to indicate it is in reverse but when revved it acts like it is in neutral.
2. the central locking between the drivers and passenger door does not work, it i lock the car using the key from the drivers side it locks all doors apart from the front passenger door.
if i lock the car with the key from the front passenger side it locks all the doors apart from the drivers door.
3. the remote central locking does not work ,i have seen a few posts how to do it but i doesnt work for mine, maybe i need no2 problem fixing first.
4. the car splutters at high revs around 3.5k + im thinking possible fuel filter blockage or fuel pump failiure, the fuel gauge also reads innacurate.

any help on the above faults would be great,no1 problem urgently needs fixing, thanks

i have been on the phone to the previous owner and he told me that if i go from neutral into reverse it works better than going from park and then into reverse, he said that there is a cable that will probably need adjusting, is this true ?
at least i have reverse gear but it takes a bit of finding !

:welcome2: to the site.

I suggest (if you haven't already) you download the Rave CD's (Range Rover workshop manuals and complete parts listing) here and also look here for loads of information about your Range Rover. We are always willing to advise/help, just enjoy the site.

thanks zzr1200, i am downloading rave as i write this, it says it will take 1hr 30 mins to download !
im going to strip the passenger door tomorrow as after lots of searching i think the motor might be seized, so i will strip it, free it up and grease it.
once i get the central locking working im hoping that i will be able to re-sync the key fob.
i like my cars immaculate and i have the cream carpets and plastics with scuff marks from shoes, does anyone know what i can use to remove these marks ?

i am now thinking that the faulty fuel reading and the hesitation high up the rev range are related, possibly in tank fuel pump ?
are the fuel pumpsm in diesels easy to change ?

Is it possible that your key fob is an after market one and will not work as a remote?? you should have got 2 remotest ( fob 1 and 2 one is a slightly darker grey than the other, but that hard to spot, you have to do it in daylight ) with the car + an emergency key

i did get two keys with it but one is either broken or needs a new battery the other key seems to work fine so thats the one i used but didnt do the trick.

If i remember right, you should put it in the ignition, and the fob should flash red, so it then sincs with the car, are you getting that flashing??

Mine is a 97 and it works that way

You just put the key in to the ignition and led will flash on the fob
I figurer if it isn't syncing like that then the fob is an after market one, and it will never work
