Put the filler cap on and with the engine running repeatedly squeeze the radiator pipes until the heater pipes warm up.
Put the heater to hot with just a little fan speed and set to dashboard vents, that way you can feel warm air starting to come through as it bleeds and heats up.
You should also have Coolant coming back into the tank while it's running with cap removed

Anyone give me an idea exactly how full the expansion tank should be when cold.
taken it for a 10min drive. Running hotter than before.

You could test the glow plugs to see if they are all actually getting voltage. They should be okay considering you said say it fired up first time previously?
Have you done lift pump test? - wammers thread in tech section. Should get 180mils.

If you fitted new glow plugs, are you sure you got the right voltage ones?yeah seems like that’s the next port of call. Am I right in saying there’s a relay to replace if not
