Well Folks,
Until I can get the original system diagnosed I've decided to fit the following speakers, along with an adaptor plate to provide clearance for the cone.
Caliber 5.25" 340w 2-Way Comps - Thompsons Ltd
Reason being at the moment I can't source speakers of the correct size for the bottom of the door which has an 11cm hole. Suspect it's a main dealer part only.
Should be here tomorrow so will run new wiring and tape up the original loom safely for later. No idea how the sound would compare to the original system, but atleast I'll have some tunes.

Took your advice Mike & called Clarion to ask if they could sort out my original '87 audio unit. Too my amazement, far from sniggering & asking ''how old sir!'' their 'resident RR specialist' said that they were keen to help those of us that wanted to keep the old units going & should be able to repair any set that Clarion had produced
When I gave him the model # he said they would 'cap' the repair cost at £50 or possibly even supply a new unit for around the same price
