100" Tomcat info?

Tomcat Motorsport - 100" Tomcat

Anyone have any experience of these kits? Would be quite nice to turn my Disco 1 into one of these - it's currently a bare chassis atm - hoping to get it cleaned up and galv dipped. Not too sure how galvanising the chassis would affect one of these kits being bolted on/welded to the chassis, perhaps there is some sort of welding that accomodates galvanised metal without rendering the galv useless?
 
no you paint the weld after galv as well as covering metal act as a sacrificiall coat so its still protected it would rust but not as untreated instead of steel going galv thins instead
 
Bit of advice mate,If you do galvanise it and then have to do some welding DONT breath in the fumes.You will end up with whats known in the trade as galvo flue,it puts you on your arse for a good couple of days in the same way flue does hence the name galvo flue

Lol I will keep that in mind, I think if I do go down the route of this kit, you may have to send the chassis to the company to attach the frame - it's things like that I need to know so I can see what my options are for keeping costs to a minimum because it ain't cheap lol. As for the price of galv dipping, its fairly cheap provided you prep the chassis yourself as much as possible before they put the final prep which makes their life easier and less of an impact on your wallet - the expensive thing is probably getting the chassis to the "dipper" but I am in the fortunate situation of having a lorry pick up the chassis which makes regular trips to get industrial items dipped.

gone are the days of £100 to galv a chassis!

My advice would be to build the whole car up and running then strip it down for galv, paint etc that way you will have a professional looking buggy with no welds covered with primer etc from forgotten bits.
 
we got some grids galved the other day, they are a similar size to a chassis but not as complex, hole and bend wise, and to do 4 it was £600. so i shouldnt see why a chassis would cost more than £200 to do. there are a fair few companys that build these kind of things tornado motorsport down the road from me where im getting my cage from, milner motorsport ner me also do them, so dont be afraid to look elsewhere :)
 
I've had 2 quotes around the £300 to galv my chassis. You currently can't buy a galv D1 chassis, but you can pick a galv'd D2 one up for a mere £2600.
 
They do have complete ones for sale but I don't have the cash available to throw at it in one go, plus I enjoy a good project and would like to use the chassis which I stripped down and V8 which is sitting on a stand ready to be tinkered with. I felt bad pulling the disco apart so at least this way she's still alive and kicking :p
