97 dse vibrations

Im sorry im back so quickly
But i apparently gained terrible vibrations over the weekend, it goes away when i turn left it follows the speed, as it dissapears turning left i suppose… Changed a ujoint half a year ago, did wonders but that didnt fix itself turning left or right…

My question is, is this a wheel bearing?
Is it a pain in the ass to fix?
My brakes looks fine, they dont appear to hang.

It vibrates so badly above 60 km/h that the becm shakes, and even my wipers stopped wiping middle in the action so
My wipers just stopd on the windscreen… it cured itself atleast… the wipers, not the vibrations

Swivels, track rod and drag link ends, wheel bearings, dodgy tire are all possible causes. Swap the wheels front to back.

Tires brand new and balanced. Fixed previous vibrations. I also hear/feel a knocking in under 40 km/h
Note, everything goes away whilst turning left

Swivels or wheel bearing would be my first things to check but the CV joint is also a possibility.
Even a new tyre can develop a defect.
My project P38 had the shakes at around 60mph. I fitted new swivels, drag link, track rod and CV joints, it is now as steady as a rock. The CV joints were actually OK but they are so cheap I thought that as I had to replace one of the rubber boots, I might as well replace the joints too.

At under 20 km/h especially downhill there is a clear knocking sound. Follows wheelspeed/drivetrain. Engine rpm ruled out

So, that could well be a CV joint. Hard to know without actually being there though. Have you checked the UJ's on the prop shafts?

checked them 2 weeks ago, no play. I replaced the front towards transfer half a year ago. Firm and no play front or rear.

will put the car in the garage when i come home from work, and re-check ujs just to make sure.
Wouldnt it be odd if it were the uj since it dissapears turning slight left? im afraid its more expensive parts as gearbox or diffs. I have changed fluids in thoose you see..

The loss of vibration turning left makes a CV joint or wheel bearing the most likely but loading up the swivels etc when turning could mean it's them or the drag link/track rod. I doubt it's gearbox or diff related.

so this is most likely my rear left cvjoint/bearing as when i turn left it dissapears? If im not wrong, turning left makes the rear left wheel/assembly work softer/less stress than right side?
Also heard the wheelbearings are a pain in the ass, as it needs a huge press, if not just a whole new hub assembly. And, i suppose i must take off the hub in order to replace the cv joint anyhow?

Sorry, is you car a P38? If it is there are no CV joints at the rear. Wheel bearing on the P38 does indeed need a 20 tonne press the alternative is to replace the whole hub.

Yes its a p38, silly me forgot solid axle. So thats more of a bugger aint it.. Im convinced its coming from the rear.

i guess i must check for play in the wheel?

my last audi had 2 bad wheel bearings both on left side. Didnt grind or make any sounds. It pulled toward the left tho, especially whilst braking.

the p38 occasionaly makes a whine, usually reversing and slighly turning left or right.

If theres no play, i guess i can take the wheel off and inspect the bearing?

I must fix this asap, as i need the car. Im obviously on my stupid afternoon shift the whole week!!

Time to get underneath with a pry bar and check every ball joint.

Swivel - yes, the big ball-joints.

I wouldn't bother with the wheel bearing. MrGorsky found a place that does a whole hub with a Timken bearing for a reasonable price. The bearing alone was over £70 last I looked and if you stuff it trying with an underside press you're up to about the same amount.

Check your prop universal joints.

I must admit, mine's been on the preventative maintenance schedule for years. Might explain that niggly vibration I can feel above 70mph (when testing on the track, obviously).

I took it to the dealer as suspected wheel bearing. As i dont have a press, and etc… Panhard rod, is that not in the front? The stiff rod next to the axle? /antirolbar??

I took it to the dealer so they could get a better look, they have a lift i dont.. Its a nice dealer atleast, i know them so its not some spooky shady people throwing that and that on me.

The car is, undriveable. It will just shake and shake and probably do lots more damage if i were to drive it. Like seriously, my becm shook, and my wipers even frooze on the middle on the windscreen

i just find it odd it all goes away turning left! Anyhow, i suppose the dealer is gonna check all the rods etc to check for firmness or looseness
