As you know the disco has a step in the roof. Used to do a particularly rough off road place in France and there was a little section we named Dans crackWhat r them things on the side for the metal things

They look unfinished at the back cos they are, was gonna continue em down the back to the bumper for more strength but never got round to it.
Why? Apart from sand, which i understand.
sidewaysstops if sucking in crap like leaves n stuff when on tight lanes
Air "forced" down snorkel, rather than engine having to "suck" - less strain for engine (except when reversing)
I agree it probably makes little difference either way, i just see that being "best practise" but, i'll admit i'm only basing it on thoughts in my head![]()
