now found that if I take out the fuse in the top left which is for horn,clock (which I don't have) ,flash main beam and interior light, the ignition lights go out. This circuit is permanent live, brown wire on one side of the fuse and purple on the other. Waiting for hands to thaw and then go...

THe key is doing something as the heater fan only comes on when the key is turned on. It looks to be only certain circuits that are staying live.
