Update... I have replaced the speedo cable today, but to no avail. It is turning fine, so it seems the problem is with the dash binnacle. Any ideas?

Have you tried heating it up? I use a small kitchen blow torch if space is tight.

Thanks for the advice folks. I saw the replacement battery on ebay, but I'm not really any good with electrics of this nature. I wouldn't even know what tools I need? Would there be somewhere I could send it away to to have the battery replace?

The driver's seat in my '93 has never worked as long as I've had the car, and the mirrors sometimes activate themselves, so I decided to take a look. I checked the fuses under the seat - all ok - then removed the ECU. This is what I found... As you can see, the battery has leaked...

Wonderful. Looks like the previous owner's bodged it after the matrix has burst. I suppose it's a relief in a way as I cancrack on and fix it now. I've been bleeding the cooling system thinking it was an airlock causing the problem. I assume it's a case of removing the dash bit by bit...

That's why I'm here too, to be honest....
